View Full Version : Found a squirrel hit by a car

I saw something moving in the street by my house and it was a young female, she had been hit by a car last night or early morning because the blood on her nose was dry.. her left eye stays open and her right eye blinks.. she pulls herself by her front feet and her backlegs arent working.. I wraped her in a towel and shes sleeping.. I dont know what internal injuries she might have so im praying to the good lord he takes her or heals her.. since squirrels arent endangered out here in calif vets wont treat them and the animal control will just put them down if she cant survive on her own.
so its up old fashioned remedies or just let nature take its course.. if anyone can give advice please do. anything for shock. I dont want her freaking out and biting because she cant see out of her left eye.
I dont know if she can even swallow or how much brain fuction she has. I do know that the brain swells in something like that and it just has to go down. So I hope I can help this little one.. I see to many squirrels dead or just hit on the road here in the valley and it sickens me so i pray to god to take the soul and make him hole when they are dead on the road.

Hi Michelle,
Sounds like you got a seriously injured squirrel on you hands. God bless you for taking the time to help her.
Warm, dark, and quiet are the first needs to be addressed until you find a rehaber in you area.
Keep her in a small container or box so she won't thrash around. Place a heating pad half under the container, be sure there is plenty of ventilation so she won't get too hot.
If you don't have a heating pad, fill a sock with dry uncooked rice and tie a knot in the end of the sock. Microwave for 1 min and see if it's warm not hot to the touch...re warm as necessary. Wrap the "rice buddy" in a old T-shirt and let her snuggle up to it.
Cover the cage or container so it's dark, let her relax.
Keep the area quiet...no TV, music or people traffic. Let her rest.
I'll look for a rehaber in you area....what county are you in?

I know you are waiting for a update, its been a wait for me too. since sunday she has done nothing but sleep. Mon I saw her one eye open and I gave her some water with a syringe (no needle) to see if she could swallow.. I saw some tongue action but no jaw movement. I keep watching her breathing.. shes a lil fighter.
Tue I noticed instead of her stretched out she was starting to sleep squirrel style with her tail wrapped around her. I was talking to her and I noticed her ear moved.. Im guessing the swelling is slowly going down so now her good side is starting to work. I went to pet her and she kinda jumped like "who r u" which excited me its the most movement she has done since i found her.
I gave her some water and for the first time I saw her move her mouth when I dripped the water in her mouth. doesnt seem like her jaw is broken which is a good sign. she still has to use of her back legs and I think she now needs to get some nourishment in her so she can get stronger..
Its 6:46am weds Morning.. shes sleeping squirrel style with her tail wraped around her.. today im thinking of making a watery gruel with walnuts, sunflower seeds almonds and some baby food fruit to feed her.. if anyone has a mixture plz let me know.
I was thinking of taking her to the pound but they would have just put her down and I've been praying to the good lord to take her or was she given to me for a reason. We find animals for a reason. God knows our gifts.
I also was given a one eyed cockateal who came from a aviary.. shes a biter but i will tame her down and she will become a good pet..

Hi Michele...you certainly did a good thing bringing this baby into your home. I believe that she needs more care than to just be watched. She may need steroids if their is swelling. I am at work now, please don't leave us. I plan on leaving here in a few minutes and will come on when I'm home. I'm sure in the meantime someone else will come on. Please stay with us so that we can help you through this...don't just wait and not get back on, we worry too...:D :D
Hang in there and stay with us and we will help you through....:thumbsup

Thank you for update and saving her from a terrifying death!
I would absolutely put a shallow dish of water, flat bottomed like a small crock pet dish, so she cannot tip it!
I would offer some acorns, to see if she can chew, even if they are not mature.
I woud offer her avacado and yogurt for immediate nourishment. If she does not seem interested due to her condition...you will need to syringe feed her for sure. We can give you a recipe or you can try Ensure as a fast pick up/perk up! Sqs love blueberries too, and they are soft and cold.
Can you post a pic of her...it will help the rehabbers give you better info.
Thanks for helping her!:grouphug

Please stay with us, we love sqs very much and want her to have comfort!

Dont worry im not leaving .. I was reading up on your nutrition area and getting a idea I will have to fix her a liquid mix thats easy to digest till she gets stronger now since she is slowly comming out of her trauma.
by her size and tail, I think she was born this spring, her tail is thin and just a little feathery not full bushy like a adult.
I was thinking the other night.. that she just came out of the nest.. maybe just getting her breakfast/dinner or still following her mom and wham.. gets me so mad how people dont care of they hit animals. :soapbox

07-22-2009, 11:04 AM
Yes nutrition is very important, she needs something to thrive.
If we knew her age and her teeth etc, we coud help better. Do you have a camera phone? would love to have a pic to work with! Even if you have to borrow one, it would be great!
Also heat will give comfort since we know she is in pain. A heating pad half under ontainer on low, or the rice buddy SS gave instructions for. Also a water bottle microwaved and wrapped in Tshirt will work.
Do you have any other animals that may have some meds?
Some may also be sq friendly and we can help with that too, if you give us a list of what you have on hand.
I also would advise going to drug store and near the vitamins you can find RESCUE REmedy...in a small yellow box, about 8 dollars. This is an all natural herbal that can be applied in many fashions and does work.
It will help keep her calm if she decides she doesn't want to be captive or gets frightened...it can be added to her drinking water, rubbed on ear or spritzed on her...a calming effect will follow...not dangerous.
Do you think you can handle her without getting bit?
Is she active at all?
If she s sitting withtail over her head, are her feet underneath her?
sorry so many questions...the rehabbers will need info and I am expediting that, thank you, bear with me.

The best thing for this squirrel would be veterinary help, which you could get by contacting a wildlife rehabber near you. Even then, it's very touch and go with a squirrel like this. She needs hydration, for example. If she is not taking much orally she will need sub-Q fluids, which a rehabber will do. She could need at least 50-60cc's of hydration per day which is very difficult to get into her without sub-Qing. Is there any possibility of getting her to someone who can do that?

Does anyone know of any rehabbers in Michigan that could help out with this one? :dono :dono

I feel she will probably be put down. if she cant fend for herself. I have had bad luck with rehabs out here.. when I found a baby crow with a broken wing I called them. I was yelled at by a rehabber telling me its illegal to keep crows, that i can be fined ect. ect.. I told her I just found it and called you guys. then she told me it would be put down because of its wing injury.. she was very cold and heartless..
there are many animals that live happly with there disabilities. they now have wheels for dogs that get hit by cars and cant walk anymore on there back feet.. blind animals, animals with 3 legs or 2. I feel you just dont give up on animals for there disablities because of there injury.. we dont put humans to sleep who get in car accidents and have to relearn to walk or have to use a wheelchair for the rest of there life..
sry for being this way but i feel a lot of humans dont want to take that step further with animals. as ceasar says animals move on.. humans dont.. they can cope with a disablility a lot better then we can. ok i will get off my soap box now. :soapbox

How does she respond to you?
:Love_Icon she really needs fluids....so if she is not taking...she'll start getting very weak...and then worse.
Are you still trying to find sanctuary, vet or rehabber?
I am just outside working in my shop, so I will keep cking back in for update. Hydration and heat are key...quiet and dark.
Have you seen her poop or pee?

Aw she is a lovely lady. Keep offering her as much fluids by mouth or some jucie fruit, waternelon, peeled grapes. Just like everyone else is saying...fluid, fluid, fluid.
You can put the "liguid tears" drops in her eye as long as there is no injury (bleeding) to the eye. Just keep it moist, her eye may improve when she feels better. So keeping it moist will help.
Does she have fleas ?
Good luck and blessing to you and her.

went to the store and bought ensure, pine nuts, sunflower seeds and some blueberry/apple baby food. ground it up to make a gruel.. she does have chewing movement when she takes the gruel and we had a pee.. gave her new bedding and now waiting for a poo. I did find one yesterday it was small. but thats a good sign of no internal injury. tomorrow I will try fruits. I put some shelled pinenuts and sunflower to see if she would eat on her own.
ty for the tip on the eye. I have dry eye syndrome I have natural tears here with no additives if thats ok to use.
as for the rescue, Im going to see how she does first.. unless i get it in writing she wont be put down for just her back legs not working. then I will hand her over where they should have a handicaped facility for her to live out her life.. there is someone who has a squirrel on the board here and it seems to be doing good with the pics I saw.. I will proabably set up her home like that in due time..
no fleas from what i see.
I have had 4 squirrels in my life.. one when i was in my teens, the other 3 is when the mother must have gotten attacked or killed and the babies fell out of the tree because of the nest being torn apart. so these lil guys are not new to me. I have also handfed baby birds, a baby rat saved from a reptile store. puppies that have been dumped in a trash can and baby sparrows that they throw in trash cans because they think there chickens will get there lice, the list goes on. you name it I try and save it.

Michelle, hi, I'm sorry that I didn't get back to you earlier, I am so busy today...Actually my daughter is coming in from California tomorrow. She lives in Santa Cruz.
There are so many good people here that are willing to help you. I am glad that we got to chat earlier. Please do what they say with the fluids, since you have done so many different animals before you know the importance of hydration, I am sure.
Feel free too to also PM any of the members here to if I'm not around, or if you need anything you can call. I just will be in and out a lot in the next few days. It is really important when dealing with a animal that was hit to try to get help that is beyond us. I will still try to keep checking around to see if there is anyone close by that perhaps can get the squirrel to a vet, only with the promise of not euthanizing. We did talk about that.
I will check in later, I have to make dinner. Hope all is well. Thank you for watching out for these little critters and lets try to get the help he may need. At least if we can just get him checked out for no internal damage.
Remember hydration....I will definitely keep in touch and you please do the same....:thumbsup :thumbsup

good morning..
how is the sq?
did you ever get her on heat?
also, your elixir that you are making...i do not ever recommend feeding pine nuts, they are sooo high in phosphorus that they depleat the calcium that is so very important.
squirrels actually can use esbilac puppy replacer milk, i always buy the dry/powder as the ready to use is good for 72 hours.[but can be frozen into cubes] [ESBILAC, it can be found at larger pet stores and feed stores, and you can try vet office also, it is actually complete]
if she will lap the ensure and water, she needs nutrition and water.
i also would not give any seed as it makes them antsy/jittery. jmo.
i was informed that you re probably not going to turn her over to a facility or a rehabber for fear of euthanization...ok!
but please find a vet or rehabber close to you...so if she goes down hill fast, you have a PLAN B. thank you
Can you give an update and new pics?
maybe a better pic of her eye...is that what seems to be her injury and is she using her legs anymore than yesterday?
I know you are doing the best you can for her, but the heat will help alot! Thanks again, waiting for an update!

Hi Michelle...hope the little one is doing well this morning. I will be in and out today so I don't know how much I will be on here. Please listen to Jackie, she definitely knows her stuff. These little ones can go downhill fast, so if you have someone lined up just in case, that would be an excellent idea. I know that you would never want the little one to suffer.
I hope too that you are aware of how much work goes into keeping a little squirrel. The proper food is expensive and then the housing and vet bills if you can in fact get a vet to see a squirrel. I don't know about California, but in most states keeping a squirrel even a non-releasable one is illegal. This is where you may run into problems when it comes to health care. Just want you to think about things, as I'm sure you are, that are going to crop up. Saying that you are keeping him is one thing, but keeping an adult wild squirrel is extremely challenging. I know that yesterday you were talking about someone on the board that had to keep one...as I said then, you may have been talking about Christine in "Christine's Chronicles". But if I'm not mistaken, she was gotten as a baby and Legomom went through and is still going through a lot of heartbreaking times with her. You will need to devote so much time to a wild squirrel, I overwinter some of them and right now have one that is soon to be released, and I am telling you, if you do it right...they take up hours and hours of your day.
Let me know if I can help in any way. If you call and I'm not home, leave a message. Hope to see you on the board with more pictures like Jackie wants, you can email them to me and I will post...:grouphug

shes on all 4s now.. she has her tail over her back which is a very good sign. if she can just eat on her own that would be great. she might be when im not in the room. In calif you need a wildlife permit to keep I think any animal that isnt in a pet store. I will call the rehab and see if she can go this week. they can give her the room to play to strengthen her legs and be a real squirrel again. with one eye tho. :flash3

Before you turn her over to a sanctuary, make sure they won't euthanize a Non releasable sq...and she is non releasable with one eye, by some peeps standards:peace . We may can find a member to try to rehab and give her a forever home. That would be a happy solution.:Love_Icon
I am glad she is perked up some.:thumbsup Is she taking water on her own?
I bet you felt so relieved to see her tail curled...:grouphug
Do youthinkthe eye injury is new/recent or has she had it? I cannot tell from pics, I don't see alot of swelling or fur loss..??!!:dono
Keep offering her a variety of foods, thinking she will eventually like something and eat on her own. :)
How much formula is she taking?
:thankyou :bowdown

This is wonderful news. Please listen to Jackie about TSB trying to find a trusted rehabber. From what I see of this little one, she can live a completely happy life if someone is willing to help her out. No need for euthanasia, from what I see!!!
Thank you for caring out enough to help this little one....she is a lucky little girl.:thumbsup :thumbsup

I let her out for a small romp. she is still week but all 4s seem to be working fine she tried to climb up my fence post which is wood she needed a little help. with a little excercize she would be fine, but i dont think she likes the cage shes in, it has plenty of room for her to walk in, its a large breeding cage for birds. but she just sits there.. still hasnt eaten food yet im thinking because of her being in a cage or she cant see it with her one eye?
shes a very shy lady now since she can only see with one eye. need to build her confidence. shes not inquisitive like squirrels are. any suggestions?:thinking

If you read on my very first post, when I was comming home I noticed something moving in the street on my drivers side.. I thought it might be a oppossium or squirrel.. I grabbed a towel and praying running up my block that it wouldnt be hit again.. thats when i found her.. her eye was all scratched up with gravel and it dried open, there was dried blood on her nose, and she was dragging her back feet.. so im assuming that she was hit the night before or early morning.. I found her about 9:30am last sunday.. its almost a week and she is almost herself but shy. shes different from my other squirrels I have had, shes not nosey as they were..

Where do you have her in your house? Since she is a wild squirrel, she isn't used to being indoors. Perhaps if you can put her in a quiet room with a towel or blanket over part of her cage she will feel more comfortable. Do you have something in the cage that she can "hide" in. An old box that isn't too big, if you turn it upside down and put a little door in it for her to get into. They like to feel safe and secure. I have these "cubes" that I get from PetSmart fleece lined and I put additional fleece in them and my little ones are always in them... She may also eat the box by the time she realizes that she likes it...:rotfl
Is she getting plenty of liquids? Did you put a shallow bowl in for her. What is she eating if anything? I wonder if her little mouth is sore. I don't know how comfortable I would be with letting her roam around outside...she could surprise you and actually get away, and I'm not too sure she is out of the woods yet. Keep us posted...You are doing great. Just need for her to eat and drink, drink, drink. You really don't want her getting dehydrated.....:D I am posting a picture of my little red in the cube that I am talking about just so that you can get a visual of what I'm talking about for the "cube"
