Yesterday afternoon, I found an adult squirrel that has been hurt and drags the back legs. It is in my garage in a protected cage big cat carrier with food water a few branches and dry leaves greens and bird feed and water, It eats . Do I take it to the vet? What do I do? Information very much appreciated

Thank you for taking this injured squirrel out of harm's way. If you have a relationship with a vet, and they are willing to treat your squirrel, that is worth the phone call. However, if they don't have experience with wildlife, then we can help you try to find a member or rehabber near you that can assist.

In the meantime, keep the squirrel in a quiet place, dimly lit. If you have a heating pad, put it on low under one corner of the box so the squirrel can climb off the heat if it gets too hot.

We have several members in NC. One will probably be on shortly.

One way or another, we'll find help for you, don't worry. Def try calling a trusted vet, or an "exotic vet" if you can find one in your area. But if that doesn't work out, we have at least one great rehabber in your state.

As ASG said, thank you for being kind enough to help this poor squirrel.

There are several exotic vets in the Charlotte, Raleigh area. There is also one down towards the south coast. Let us know which area works best for you if you need some help finding a vet.

:Welcome and thank you for rescuing this squirrel and looking for help!

I sent messages to rehabbers in NC, they may not be in your part of the state, but perhaps know someone who is (fyi, they are ravenlaws32, SQUIRRELMOM and Sissy).

The squirrel will be less frightened if you drape a sheet over most of the cage so it looks like it is in a more secure space. :)
