I don't know, but it'll help the rehabbers to know how big the squirrel is and how much he ate...

alright here it is: VITAMIN K 2.5 mkg/kg IM, PO, SID, then switch to oral 2.5 mg/kg PO for 3 to 6 WEEKS.

PM me if you need explanation of these terms.

Thanks, IR; I didn't know what the proper procedure was to draw attention to an apparent emergency that's not posted in the emergency forum and the original post seemed to be languishing.

nhucal, you're in good hands now...

FROM "Wild Mammal Babies" @ Ruth/Gode pps 151-152

Also: provide rehydration and warmth. Activated charcoal does not detoxify but does block absorption of the substance. It is effective if used WITHIN TWO HOURS OF INGESTION. Use the charcoal along with an emetic such as hydrogen peroxide. Mineral oil also speeds the substance thru the GI tract as a cathartic...

Whew...no problem, Meglos. I had just walked in the house and looked at my email...luckily the Emergency Forum post triggered a message to my Outlook mailbox. When the system works, it works beautifully. :D :thumbsup

I came across this website earlier today, which has additional info on duration of treatment, etc.: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/rat_poison.html

Hoping that the vitamin K does the trick. :grouphug :grouphug :grouphug Please let us know.

Also -- if any of the dosing info did not make sense PLEASE ASK and more detailed info can be provided! :)

I hope you found out in time to induce vomiting, that's the most effective treatment. You might also consider SQ fluids to aid in getting the drug out of the system. With dogs we always advise strict exercise restrictions (no running, jumping, rough play etc.) during the entire course of therapy (4 weeks). Here are some things to watch for: lethary, weakness, soft cough, shortness of breath, anorexia, black stool, bruising and bleeding. Good Luck!

One thing that wasn't mentioned was that the vitamin K injection can commonly cause a full on anyphalaxic reaction necessitating the use of epinepherine.

It'd be nice to get an update from nhucal.

What happened, and how did this turn out?
