:osnap My squirrel bites ppl, not me, but others. She just took a chunk our of my boyfriend's finger earlier tonight and she's bitten my mom before. I need help, does anybody know how to get her to quit biting? Is there any way? I have a young nice and nephew that like her and I can't let them near her to be safe cuz if she bit one of them I'd be forced to get rid of her and I REALLY REALLY don't want to do that but I would like at least my niece to be able to pet her and maybe hold her when she gets older. Please help me

Squirrels can be/are very territorial animals and tend to be "one-person" "pets." I really don't think you can train them to be otherwise--unless you really break their spirit. If your baby is a "biter," about the only suggestion I have at the moment is to keep others away from her, and as far as your neice and nephew being able to pet and hold her, squirrels aren't lap dogs and never will be. Part of having a squirrel as a pet is accepting the fact that they are what they are--rambunctious, hyperactive, often destructive, sometimes painful, always messy little miracles of nature. When someone suggests to me he or she would like to have a squirrel as a pet, I often ask them to picture having Bugs Bunny's Tasmanian Devil as a pet--not a lot of difference at times.

My breeder led me to believe slightly otherwise, he'd only ever dealt with one squirrel over his about 15 yrs of breeding that didn't like others and even then it liked it's couple owners so I held out hope. I know fully well she's no lap dog, if I wanted a lap dog then I'd have gotten a chihuahua. My niece and nephew are around my house a lot and I'd like her to be able to be out while their here but I guess that can't be so, I can deal with this, I just have to make sure they don't get close enought to where she can bite them while they watch her play in her cage.

What type of squirrel are you talking about? A grey or flyer?

I think if no one tries to pet or hold your flyer, he won't bite...Most aren't pets that like being held...

If it is a baby or juvy, you may just start being active alot with her. Buy a bonding pouch and start taking her places with you. Let her hear your voice even in the daytime hours, next to your heart.
I have been told they will get accustomed to people and gradually accept more as time goes by.
I have 10 flyers, however I am not trying to make them my pets, BUT..so inncredible, they are so dang friendly and adore me, even the grouchy ones! I find them better suited for being a pet, for sure. The flyers I am around...must must must immediately jump on me.
I have a combination of sfs that i raised since pinkies, and some that just needed to be rehomed.
I know I didn't offer much help, but maybe in time with extra lovins, a stern no no, and a tap on the nose...she'll get the point...keep trying:thumbsup
Others here will have better advise:wave123

Alright thanks, I have a bag but she chewed through it lol I'm making more. I hope she wont bite as long as they leave her be, now i just have to get those two rascals to do so lol I thinks training the squirrel might actually be easier haha Sweet I did something right by tapping her nose solidly (not hard or a little love tap) when she let go of my bf, thankfully it didn't bother him and was cool bout it. :crazy
Wow, how'd you end up with so many flyers?

:D you know that saying, build it and they will come! LOL
actually the opposite, I got a couple pinkkies from Mona the tree trimmer {my first two ever} and then the vet called and then and then...and then!
In MY trees I do not have flyers, so I searched a good release place and couldnt find one...
sooo, Muffin Sq, our SFS Guru/advisor has pointed me in the general area of starting a colony here at Sq Central! {my backyard, lol}. I know there are flyers in my area, just not sure where. In the fall I will open the release cage and let them decide what they want to do!:dono
My NRBF and I built a gazebo and we call it Midnight Madness, I think:thinking !
With some junk wood and some friends helping us, the flyer habitat was born!
:poke They have been mating...so not sure how many I will have in the fall! ha!:tilt
It maybe a real surprise!:jump
so actually I am very new to flyers myself!
about the biting...I get nervous if I think one of my sqs may bite someone, usually it freaks peeps out and they instinctually and unintentionly sling the sq to its death or worse:shakehead ...So please be careful!
:poke We need pics!
