89406Hi, we have had this little guy since May when he lost his home and mom during a thunderstorm. Was wondering if anyone could give me their opinion. Fox squirrel? Have raised a few Greys and he just doesnt fit. He seems to be leaning towards being unreleasable, his balance and coordination is very slow coming and he came to us with crooked legs, so..But,he is a sweet, happy, playful little guy,has a very healthy appetite and even eats the rodent blocks along w fruits and veggies. Thanks for any input. Scrat's mom mjs

I have greys and foxers in my yard. I'm in Houston
if his stomach is not white he's probably a fox... (I'm not an expert..just going by what I see in my yard..:D )

Definetely a foxer. Does he have head trauma? He looks like he has either head trauma or is a down syndrome baby.

:Welcome Suehses—I’m so sorry that your little guy lost his mommy during a thunderstorm, that is so sad—what a rough start at life for him. So very grateful that you found him and are helping him. He sounds so sweet. Your little guy is absolutely adorable, words cannot express just how adorable he is. Wishing you and your little guy all of the best. Thank you so very much for saving him.
Welcome to TSB, you are really going to love it here. Lots of good people to help the both of you.
Have you checked out the nutrition section (http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=191)yet?

Yes, I have checked the whole site for info since the day we got him. As for the head trauma, I kind of assume so since he and his nest were on the pavement under a tree. I had checked on Down's babes also and he seems to fit the mold there. His development is way behind where it should be, since he was furred and had his first incisors in when we got him the first week of April, just checked the date. So it's been nearly 3 mnths. He's doing great if you forget he's a squirrel! He can only climb onto the bed or couch if there is a blanket far enough down to reach, does climb the speakers to sit in the window now. Little guy can't even begin to jump. He has fun though, running around with a hitchy little gait, knows where his bed is as well as food and water in bedroom and living room. Still haven't had to put a top on his sleeping quarters so far. Alot of it is his back legs, either he was calcium deficeint or injured in the fall. Has been eating calcium on his own since he came. I figure he's just unique, whatever the reason.:D :D

Suehses—Wow, he really seems like a special squirrel, what was his name again? About the calcium, I’m not a rehabber, but 4skwerlz is the nutrition expert here. I have heard though when they are deficient in the calcium they just eat it, they seem to know their bodies need it, maybe that is the case. Do you have him under the special light? I wish I could be of more insight to you, but I am sure an experienced rehabber will be on soon with input.

His name is Scrat! Has quite the attitude at times when he has food and you get near. Cute attitude really, not mean at all so far, just grumbles and gripes, will keep turning his back on me. Luv him.:crazy

he's such a sweet, beautiful looking boy! You are very fortunate that he eats well, because sometimes these Downs-type babies won't take anything except formula for their entire lives. Enjoy him -- it's not everyone who gets one of these special little ones in their lives. And yes he's definitely a fox squirrel. :D

What a beauty! I immediately thought Downs, but as you said he was on concrete. Either way, he's lucky to have found you. Good luck and thanks for being a great person.:thumbsup

89459 I would sincerely like to thank all of you who have given me input. As I stated earlier although he's not my first squirrel,he is the first that seems a little "different". The others past I released back into the wild, which was a great experience in itself. One female returned with her babies for two seasons. This one is so different, there isn't even a question of when to release him at this point. I do have another question that I omitted earlier..anyone have any idea if he may have narcolepsy? He will be tottering around the house, stop, tail droops, fall asleep. Occasionaly I take him outside, set him in the yard or on a branch. He will root around for a bit,but even outside he may be wide awake, then...tail droop and he's out. It doesn't matter where he is, it's like if he's tired, he's tired, nap time. It's so cute, but I know he will never be safe unsupervised. My only worry is that there is some kind of problem that will escalate as time goes by, whereas normally it would be the opposite. He still is the best, and cutest, squirrel I've ever met. :flash3

What a beautiful boy foxer:Love_Icon :Love_Icon He is just precious and you two are so lucky to have each other. His stopping and falling asleep sounds to me as if he is having small seizures. I doubt that this little fellow will be releasable.
:Welcome :Welcome To the board. We are one big loving family here. I for one am looking forward to more pictures of this boy in the future:D :D

suehses, I am recalling another Downs-type baby someone had here who used to fall asleep like that...it may be the nature of these babies.

What a darling little fellow.
I would love to just pick him up and kiss his belly.:Love_Icon
Thanks for taking such good care of him.
I think IR may be right in saying this sleepiness may be attributed to downs issues. However, if you make his habitat safe and he knows where his bed is, he will probably start making his way to his bed for naps.
Still, it wouldn't hurt to have a qualified vet look at him. It may be a situation where something is pressing on a nerve and makes him pass out. Perhaps an x-ray would show anything misaligned or any other potential issues. You did mention that his legs were crooked and this may have to with spine alignment and the nerves surrounding the vertebrae. It's definitely worth checking into.
What a cutie!! :grouphug :Love_Icon

89483Over the last week he has started taking himself to bed for naps when the mood strikes him. He still will fall asleep at the drop of a hat so I guess it's time to have him checked out. Thanks to all of you for the advice and info.:thankyou

Awww, he is too cute, I love that picture of him. I would say he is a downs baby. I read somewhere that when they are babies on formula they drink well, but often have to be woken up several times while feeding because they fall asleep. It must be the way they are. He is quite the little cutie :Love_Icon.

I'm sorry to hear about your little one. I'm sure that what they bring to us is worth every moment, regardless of a time frame. At first, I thought I had a "normal" baby squirrel and was psyching myself up for that challenge in itself. As time goes on I've come to learn so much and re-adjust to the fact that not only is he not by any means releaseable but that I'm just glad he's here. I hope the day comes he "sprouts" and is ready to face the world but if not...ok. I assume that he won't be around nearly as long as a regular squirrel. He is happy just the way he is so that's good enough. Hopefully I have just a part of the time with him that you had with yours.:thankyou

OMG he's precious.
Thank you for posting this. I'm new to squirrels (but hooked!). I got 3 squirrels from a wildlife rehab a week or so ago, and I am thinking one of them may be a Downs baby.
While your baby is eating (formula) does he sometimes kind of zone out?
SQUIRRELMOM

yes, it can take up to 45 min to feed one, they will not suck, mine haven't anyway. can you send a pic to me. cardinalmotors@windstream.net. thanks
they do zone out, they take awhile to wein . 15 or so weeks. they do climb but let go and fall back, don't put him in a high climbing cage.
OMG he's precious.

Looks like a white breasted fox squirrel. Has he grown much from when you first got him? Are you keeping him? He is very precious! :grouphug

What a precious face he has!! I'm new to all this but from the photos I've seen of them and what I've read about them he seems to be a down's baby. I hope you can get him to a vet and make sure he doesn't have any other problems that are causing the "sleeping" episodes. :thankyou for joining and sharing him with us. Keep us updated and keep those precious pictures coming-he is soooo adorable!:D :Love_Icon :Love_Icon
