Lucky our squrriel has been outside on his own for a a few weeks now. Tonight he came to our deck door screen to climb around (like he does every night) This time he peed allover it and stared to throw up on the screen. Now he is in the corner of our deck making noises like he is gagging.... any help or suggestions please. He looks scared and sounds awful

Can you handle him without being bitten? If so, you need to make sure he isn't, in fact, gagging on something. He might have also eaten something that isn't agreeing with him, maybe even poison. Getting him to a vet is the best thing for you to do.

Ratman, I am so sorry to hear this, I am not a rehabber and have no advice, but my heart goes out to you and Lucky. This poor baby, I am truly so very sorry. I am praying for Lucky.

he just ran away...maybe back to his nest... we did leave our window open so he can get back in to his cage if he wants. As far as handling him the last time he was inside he did attack my hand.
He was fine when he came on our deck, I fed him a peanut and within less than a minute he seemed sick

Oh my goodness, this poor baby. I will say a prayer that he will be well and that he will return to you soon so you can check him over. I am sending you positive energy.

He could have choked on a piece of the peanut and finally got it out. Let's hope that is all it was. This is a matter of debate, but I never give peanuts to wilds or the ones I raise. Peanuts aren't very good for them in the first place as they are high in phosohorus AND they have a protein inhibitor in them, ALONG WITH they can develop a mold/fungus that can actually be toxic. Others feed their squirrels peanuts all the time without problem, but I won't take any chances with them.

I think PBluejay is right, he probably choked on a piece of peanut since it happened so quickly after he ate it. Can you check what he threw up and see if there's a piece of peanut or the peanut skin in it?

Yes, there was some peanut in what he threw up. After he threw up he sat on the deck still making awful sounds like he was still gagging or something. He ran away after about 10 minutes..... hopefully he will be back.

Hi everbody, My wife has been posting in this thread for me...but as a long time rat care giver I have a question.....if squirrels are rodents like rats then they can't throw up right?
Or do squirrels have that reflux action that rats don't?

Help me out here......thanks again, Jeff and Josie in MN

A lot of people will tell you that squirrels can't vomit, but a lot of members will
argue that point because they have indeed seen a squirrel throw up.
Not sure what the physiological differences are, but they must be there. :dono

No Lucky sightings yet..... but then again he usually stops by in the evening to say"hi". Were just keeping our fingers crossed that we will see him soon.

Still no Lucky :Cry ..... But, it has been cold and rainy outside. The first time Lucky escaped from the house, it was really cold, rainy and no leaves on the trees. We did not see him for a couple of days then he came home one night at 9:30pm when it was dark and was clining to our deck door screen saying "let me in ! let me in!!" Hopefully he has a nest now & is nice and warm and does not want to brave the the cold & rain...... I just hope to see him again.
