Okay... I bought Tails his first artichoke today. How do you serve it? Which part is edible?

I know what you mean about serving it. I like to eat them myself actually but buy them frozen because of the choke thing inside, but shhh don't tell anyone.
I know that 4swkerl is the expert here on nutrition, so she totally will know the answer. Have a great day, and don't worry someone will here to answer you soon.

Artichokes are fine. The edible parts are the base and inner lining of each leaf, the stem, and the fleshy ring at the top of the stem. There is a small core of fluffy fibers in the center of the core that is usually removed--not harmful, just like getting a mouthful of cotton.

Don't forget to cut off the tips of the petals...so your little one doesn't get poked...

I cut the leaf down to the bottom and make sure I get some of the white part left on....I was told to always cut out the little hairs because the squirrels could choke.
Kola loves his artichoke leaves and sometimes he will rip it all up chewing the leaf to shreds.

:wahoo
ok - here are some pics
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/reddliz/P1010001.jpg
I start by cutting the bottom off
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/reddliz/P1010011.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/reddliz/P1010010.jpg
then I take all the hairs out
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/reddliz/P1010012.jpg
then I cut the leaf off at the bottom leaving some of the white part on
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/reddliz/P1010005.jpg
then I cut the tip off the leaf so it is not so sharp
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/reddliz/P1010015.jpg
I save the thick part of the bottom and he eats that too
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/reddliz/P1010014-1.jpg
I discard all the guts
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/reddliz/P1010013-1.jpg
I store the artichoke in a plastic bag for up to 5 days....Kola will let me know when its no longer fresh enough. :D
:jump
I hope that helps :wave123

Hi................
My BEAN..loves them.
I dont bother cutting the core or gutting it..
I just rip off the pettal type leaves and just give it to him..and he will have at it...(I never cut the pointy tip off)...same thing when I give him fresh roses...I dont take the thorns off...makes it more natural...an adventure...for them...:D
He loves them ...Oh and LOVES Saw Palmetto Fruit's ..I came accross a BAG..from last year for him..and HE LOVES those as well.....(SUPER STINKY fruit)..but loves them...
Well.....Have a great night..and keep giving those YUMMY Vegi's..:thumbsup
AND I love the step by step..pictures..
Thats usually what I do..when Im cooking..taking pics in stages:D
HAve a nice night..

Hi all,
You can cut the leaves' top and get the hairy part out with a spoon..
Or you can cut it vertically from the middle and clean the hairy part..
Actually it is the bottom meaty part that they enjoy the most..

Actually,
SORRY, I AM NOT TRYING TO THREADJACK, but you can do many things with artichoke not for only your fuzzbuts, but also for yourslef..
Stuffed Artichoke is yummy! (similar to stuffed zucchini flowers, but you can also use minced meat in filling)
And, you can cut the leaves and hairy part, chop them (head-meaty part) like french fries (not as slim) and fry them, wow, i want some now! :poke

I tried feeding artichokes for the first time this spring and my rehab squirrels LOVED them. Actually I found a package of baby artichokes which were nice because they don't have the big thorns on the tips and can be given whole without wasting too much. I laughed when I saw my babies hold the leaves in their hands and use their teeth to strip the inside flesh, just like people do! They also seemed to enjoy just ripping them up.
