Hi I'm a wild life rehabber in NY

I have a baby starling in my care who has a very soft ticking sound when breathing and is breathing the tiniest bit heavy. He is chirping away and eating just fine though seems a bit more lethargic than earlier today but could just be tired he's been chirping allll day and is sleeping now . I switched to a less liquid diet just incase he aspirated but I didn't see any signs of aspiration since I've had him though someone did have him before I did. Do any of the rehabbers on here also do birds like me. I've tried desperately to find answers and or a bird forum but no one has answered and my post has been up for hours now. I'm starting to get really concerned and I know with aspirations time is of the essence. If anyone at all can help I'd really appriciate it also I brought him in the bathroom while I took a shower hoping it would help.

Stool is normal
eating well
ticking is so soft i have to put him to my ear to hear it
he's breathing a little heavey and has been since I got him
use to hop around on the floor but isnt now and use to have a strong grip on my finger when standing but not so much now.

I'm at work, so I don't know how much I can be on the computer...I will try though. He may have been gotten by a cat. Do you see any puncture wounds anywhere? This is going to sound strange but is there an odor anywhere around his neck, wings etc. can you see anything like pussie. I had a bird once that had an infection from a cat bite and thought I looked him over pretty well, and he had symptoms just like your little guy, then a couple of days later I smelled an odor, he had a bad infection. I took him to the vet for a shot of antibiotics...
What are you feeding him, and do you know what kind of bird this is?

I don't see any wounds or smell any odors thus far. starlings are very commone when I live theres no mistaking one especially bc all they do is chirp (more like scream) non stop youd think they would get tired but they dont lol. I'm feeding him a little soaked cat food with bird vitamins and bird formula.

I've had a few birds in but never a ticking, clicking sound. My first thoughts would be possible pneumonia. I've attached a short list of N.Y. rehabbers - don't know what area you are in, but looks like they all deal with birds.

Do you have a vet that will look at him? Perhaps that would be the best bet since you're not too sure what we're dealing with. Yes, I know starlings, they do love to talk and talk and talk.....:crazy :crazy :crazy

:wave123 Is he a fledgling, fully feathered just in need of a little more time to fly? You need to give him so meal worms to. Are you mixing your baby food kinda thick? (Don't forget, not to feed after 7 pm. They don't need food at night.) I know this is allot of questions, but it will help find out what is going on with your baby. Do you have a heating pad under half the cage? Do you have a picture of him? Do you have a vet you can take him to? It sounds like pneumonia and will need antibiotics. Can you get aholed of some Naxcell? ( this is a shot) He will need this for 5 to 7 days. While he is sick is he in a smaller bird cage? (like a cocktail cage) My little grackle eat almost every hour the first 2 days. Then I starter putting meal worms in a seed cup (the kind for parrots) with a mixture of sunflower seeds.(need to be unshelled) some pecans, walnuts, and any seeds I can brake up into small pieces. On another platform I put some Boiled eggs, apple, cooked carrots, and the moistened cat & dog food for him to pick at. Don't forget to put some water in with him. (show him where it is) Dunk his beak in the water a few times, you should see him swallow it. Be sue he has something to perch on, and make a small nest on bottom of cage. ( he will snuggle into it). :grouphug Good luck with your little bird I hope things go good for you. Christal P.S. I am not licensed but I raised birds for almost 10 years. Every one in the neighborhood would bring me every baby bird they would find.
