Oh no. Sounds like a prolapse, which means part of his lower intestines have come out. This is a medical emergency, and you'll need to find a vet right away. Not sure what the laws are there about vets seeing wild animals....

4skwerlz is right -- this is serious. Try this page, putting your zip code in to see what exotic vets ar nearby. Many of them also treat wildlife....

You should call first without giving your name and ask whether they would treat a squirrel, and would they let you "release it back in your yard"....

I'm still searching for other vets for you....

Thank you all very much. The few vets that are still open will make me surrender him. That I do not want to do, but if that is my only option, then I have to. Is there anything that can be done to have the intestine go back in.. any ideas.

You're in good hands with Island Rehabber.

While you're searching for a vet, keep him very warm and quiet. Don't give him any food or formula. Give him plain water with a few drops of fruit juice in it to keep him hydrated.

Did you tell the vets you were rehabbing him for eventual release?

That I did.. they still wont budge. They told me to take him to the Saint Paul Wildlife Rehab. I called, I must surrender him

Try the wrcmn in Roseville -- maybe they are more sympathetic....
I'll keep searching....

To get this situation under control, I think you will have to give your squirrel to someone else. It is hard to do, but if you don't then there will be no squirrel for you to raise as this is life threatening. I would not hand him over to the vets as they may euthanize him. I would get him to the rehab facility. He will have lots of squirrely friends to grow up with there too.

I haven't ever seen a squirrel with a prolapsed anus, but it seems to be common with opossums. I have seen 4 come into the wildlife center like that or get it a couple days later. They would put some kind of ointment on and try to push it back into place. I am not sure if they had any success because I only go once a week, so the babies either recovered or died in that week.

Good luck with the little guy :grouphug.

:grouphug Poor little guy :grouphug

In my opinion, and I am not a rehabber, if the only way to help meant giving him up...after I made a million phone calls to every vet & wildlife center I could find within a 250 mile radius...I think that's what I would have to do.

Good luck with your little one & please, keep us posted.

I agree. He can't live without vet care, and something must be done quickly.

Please let us know something. I think all of worry as much about squirrels not in our care as the ones that are in our care.
Praying for this little one. Wish I knew what to tell you; other than do what is best for all of God's creatures. I know you will do the right thing.
Peace Love & Happiness

after a long night with him, he is doing well. The prolapse is still somewhat visible but is looks red and healthy. I am trying vets in the Wisconsin area (different laws) and I am hopeful. If its all in vain, I will be dropping off little Dexter to the Wildlife Rehab this afternoon to get the treatment. Better him alive and away from us than gone.

Good luck with the WI vets. I hope & pray you can find someone to help him so that you may keep him. I am very happy to hear that you are willing to give him up for his own sake, if need be. :grouphug

trivialbrian, I know this will seem silly but it worked for me: IF you end up having to surrender him to a rehabber or wildlife vet, make it very clear that you are extremely interested in his outcome, and in wildlife rehabilitation in general. Call every day to see how he's doing, even twice a day. Don't worry about making a pest of yourself. I did this when I had to surrender my first "pet squirrel" to a rehabber after he broke his hind leg. I was heartbroken because, of course, she told me she would not give him back to me. I haunted her.....she hated me.....then we became best buddies (to this day) and she not only gave me back the squirrel but recruited me into rehabbing. :sanp3 :D It's worth a try, at least.

Thank you for the update.

Hope all goes well with the squirrel & you.
Getting involved with wildlife is the greatest gift you can give I think and everyone needs volunteers....always.

:thumbsup You did the right thing. I had to take my first squirrel back to the rehab center that gave him to me to "babysit" and I know how hard it is.
