The RI Quads have been in a release cage since last friday. They are doing pretty good although one little male is all wet on his underbelly. This is the second day and it does appear to be urine.

I have seen him outside of the squirrel box running around with the others, he's eating, and seems normal but he's very wet. The box inside which they have brought in many leaves and there are a few fleece peices from there other cage, and these things don't seem to be drenched at all. I also wondered if the others were suckling him , making him urinate inside the box? the others are all nice and dry. Should I be bathing him? Just pulling him aside from the others makes him very nervous, as I considered seperating him for a day or two, but then thought that would be too hard on him. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

:wave123 Hello Mads...I would just watch for awhile...he may have a weak bladder and be getting scared and not wanting to leave the box...:dono
maybe offer some diluted cranberry for all of them...I really do not have anything to add.:dono
glad to hear they are almost home!:thumbsup

Sorry Jackie. I forget that you can't see the movies. I'll try and remember to take some still shots.

I can't think of why this would happen:thinking except maybe he is a bit nervous still and may be urinating out of nervousness as he lays flat on his belly:dono

I agree that separation may be too stressful so I would keep a close eye on him for a while and hope it all gets better before trying to separate.

I loved the video! Good thing that bird in the beginning was an Osprey and not a squirrel killer but it was still scary to see her:eek:

I also was thrilled to see the Fab 5:multi What a great thing to see a one eyed squirrel surviving just fine:wott

:wave123 Mads!

:thinking Am I recalling right that (adult) males will pee and drag themselves through the puddle to become more, ummmm, attractive to the lady squirrels? :tilt :shakehead It seems I read that someplace? :dono He might be a little young for that sort of behavior, but is that possible? Maybe he's been watching the big kids? Secretly subscribing to PlaySquirrel Magazine? :D (not meaning to make light of it, and I do hope it's something inconsequential)

Here's some photo's I just took . The wet male is still wet, but much redder than he was this morning. I brought him inside and ran some warm water over him, dried him and put some solid gold skin cream on him. I can't imagine what it is, but I did clean out the box too , just incase. The box I bought and it comes with the sawdust inside, I took out most of it, but left in about 3-4 cups thinking that it's soft I'm thinking that may have been a mistake. So I removed that and just left in some leaves and their soft fleece. Odd though that it's just the one with the wet underbelly. This photo doesn't do the redness justice....because he's very red.

:thinking :thinking Does he have mites? some times they will lick them selves to get them off. It looks like my dog when his allergies are acting up. But you can see him licking licking himself. When you take him out and feel it. is it stiff on hair. does it dry fast,or keep the wet look? does it smell? if so what kind of smell?

I did notice him licking himself like mad...but, I took him out and looked him over, I wasn't seeing anything. Are we talking about Mites or fleas? How can I treat him if it was mites? What would be safe? I was thinking a allergic reaction to the fine sawdust, but, certainly , mites would make sense. He is eating fine.....and he seems to be out when the others are out of the box also. Could he be affected by mites and the rest of them not? :dono :dono

Wow, he is really wet! I would guess the redness is from the urine irritating him if it is urine. Does it smell like urine? I wouldn't think mite would just effect one especially since they sleep together. I just can't understand why this would be happening. You may have to bring him in for awhile and observe him. Since they are still taking formula from you, he is still attached to her so he may not be as upset being back in familiar surroundings.

Well, I just fed the Quads and my little 'wet" male was looking better than yesterday. His coat is drying and the redness was alot less. Perhaps the solid gold skin cream I put on him is not good tasting, or it has something to do with the wood chips taken out of the box.

Has anyone used diatomaceous earth in their outside release cages for flea and mite control?

Hello Mads, glad the cream is helping the sweetie.
I have had pee'ers before...not really sure why they leak or puddle on themselves, but all grew out of it.
If the urine isn't smelly I do not make big of it...however if it as I would contact doc.
I offer cranberry juice or berries when in season. Just my m/o.
I have used diaper rash ointment for sensitive skin and redness. Dry sq well before applying any cream for sure, not to trap dampness under protective healing barrier.
Glad you cleaned out the box too:dono ya never know.
I would bring him inside and keep him on clean soft dry cloth and spoil him and kiss him and make him feel special and kiss him some more and give him extra mommy time...and reapply kisses and love him til he WANTS back outside!:rotfl
