My grey squirrel had a cut on his back leg. It has gotten infected and he keeps chewing on it. He has chewed almost completely through his leg down to the bone. I have called several places in my area and no one seems to be able to help. Any advice of what I can do, OR any one in the SE louisiana area that can help PLEASE. We have had him for well over a year he is a part of our family and we dont want to lose him.

Squirrels will do this when a limb is painful or bothering them in some way, and they will actually chew it off (self-mutilate) in an effort to be free of it. Hang in there Melissa -- let's see if we can find some help for you, either a vet or at least a rehabber.....In the meantime, go here for info on how to put an e-collar on him so he can't continue to chew...

Melissa, I live in Texas, about 25 miles above Beaumont. I don't know what part of LA you live in, but if you want to make the trip, I have a vet here that works on my squirrels. PM me if you want more information.

Husband just got back from petsmart. They didnt have one small enough. I have searched through the post of mias wounds and can not seen to find where it says how to make your own collar. Does anyone else see that information?

Just please be cautious taking him to a vet in an illegal state, if he makes any mention of keeping him ( euthanize ), grab him and run!

Hi all and Melissa2169,
I am soo sorry you are going through the same problem i have..
It will need A LOT of time to heal and a lot of patience and also you will need to put medicine on twice a day. I am using a kind of disinfectant medicine and then applying powdered antibiotics on the wound. Most probably you will need antibiotics oral or injection as well..
Here is the link HOW TO MAKE ECOLLAR:
In Mia's thread:

Or:

Just find an x-ray film and cut as it is shown in the template in the site above.
Do not trust the bandage, just wrap it tightly all around from the bottom, so it doesn't extend and he takes it off.
I use stapler for the outer (big) part of the cone and middle. and then close it with a band so Mia doesn't hurt herself.
Check Mia's pics and you will see details..
Hope it helps and also i hope he will get well soon..

Are you not able to make the collar yourself using the clear plastic, you know the ones that is used as pkging for tapes etc? and then stapled it together to make the collar. the edges can be sharp so you may want to use fabric piping. Giving him some Arnica homeopathy may help but he needs anti-biotics. If there is anything I can do to help, let me know

Hi Melissa, how did it go at the vets? Hope he gave you meds for the little guy.
Merman can certainly tell you all about it - he's an expert now after going through months of Mias leg chewing. But it finally seems much better now. Right Merman?

I know, I'm hanging at the edge of my seat. She probably just drank herself silly to relieve the stress (on her)!
