View Full Version : getting rid of fleas
Hello there. I have a sick male and fleas are eating him alive. all I have is de flea spray for cats and dogs. label says not to use on cats/dogs under 12wks,can I use it for him., thanks
I dont have flea comb and it is late. stores are closed. I have diatomaceous earth. I have killed the ones that have crawled out. I think he has an infection and is on anti-biotic since his capture yesterday. I only have access to Ivermectin. Is there another alternative???
It is 11pm where I am. Are you saying to wash him now? Wont he freeze to death?
What I would like to know is if there anything I can do for now. My eye sight is not too good so it would be difficult to try to pick the fleas off him unless they crawl out and I have killed a few that way.
thanks
sqlady, says not to use the De Flea. So I am not sure what I shd do. I wont be able to wash him as it is late and the heating pad I have is for seed germination which is not very good. thanks
No kitten flea powder. I only have De flea spray and diatomaceous earth
Can I get Advantage from Petco or Petsmart?? I wont have it till tomorrow late afternoon, around 5pm. I dont drive so cant get it until I get a lift. This Advantage is it for dogs or cats, puppies or kitten. Please be more specific. thanks
I am going to try to give him some pedialtye, then go to bed in a few mins time. I will check to see if there are any suggestions before I log off. thanks
OK thanks. any brand in particular?
If you have the diatomaceous earth, why couldn't just that be used? Fossel shell powder shouldn't hurt the squirrel , but it would kill the fleas quite efficiently... of course, I would lightly dust him , but covering his face so that he doesn't breathe in the fine powder.
I was waiting for someone to say it is OK. thanks!

I agree with Sqrlady. Diatomaceous earth should never be inhaled...it can cause permanent lung damage...so it should not be used on or near the squirrels. I would follow the advice posted by Gammas from the Wild Baby Mammals book--it is tried and true!

I used baby talcum powder. Johnsons and Johnsons. It doesn't kill the fleas but it makes it difficult for them to breathe so they jump off. Any animal that comes through our house as a baby starts out with a bath and a powder with J&J baby powder.
Its hasn't had any adverse effects on my Squirrels (obviously avoid their eyes and noses.)
I held off using it as long as poss then I got a response and used it awhile a go. He is very poorly, sadly I dont think he will last much longer

I have been very careful to dust the DE on the sick baby but one can never be 100% sure. In any event, I just gave him a warm bath in the sink with castile soap cos that is all I have to kill the fleas and wash off any DE. He seem to enjoy it and is very very weak. Wiped him dry and put in a bed sheet and he is resting in the sink/drainer.
I could not bathe him last night as it was very late and did not have the appropriate heating mat. He has a sock buddy with him at the moment, Thanks again all for your kind suggestions
