Just wanted to stop in and give everyone an update. Big sigh of relief, he did SOOO awesome today! I was so stressed out all day, and now feel so much better. He was very steady under Sevo, and we were able to get 3 VERY nice 6mm biopsies. I was also able to get a full blood panel, and updated x rays. We gave him some more fluids, Buprenex, and Reglan....which I think made a difference because I got him to eat the slurry mix willingly and enthusiastically actually!! The reason we were questioning the Metacam is because he's very Jaundice, and metacam can effect the liver so we didn't want to push him over the edge if he was already having liver issues. I wouldn't have thought twice about it if he didn't turn yellow.
So, now we're just playing the waiting game to see what all our results turn out to be. Wish us good luck.
Thanks,
Jess

Just got the biopsy results and though you guys might want to know.
SOURCE/HISTORY Moderately firm, invasive subcutaneous mass at prep use. Fattytexture, does not bleed easily.
MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION The specimen is characterized by a poorly demarcated andnonencapsulated proliferation of atypical polyhedral and spindloidcells. These cells are proliferating as solid sheets in a disorganizedfascicular or storiform pattern within an edematous, collagenousstroma.. Individual cells are characterized by moderate eosinophiliccytoplasm and moderately pleomorphic euchromatic nuclei with variablysized nucleoli. There are 1 to 2 mitotic figures per high power field.Moderate necrosis is found at the deep aspect of the mass.
MICROSCOPIC INTERPRETATION Dermal and subcutaneous fibrosarcoma.
COMMENTS As in domestic animals, fibrosarcomas in squirrels typically exhibit alocally invasive growth pattern and may develop areas of necrosis asthey enlarge. Secondary inflammation and self-trauma may occur atthese sites. The potential for metastasis is typically low, butmetastatic lesions may extend to local lymph nodes prior to seeding ofdistant sites (such as the lungs or liver) at late stages of disease.Specimen margins cannot be evaluated as only a portion of the lesionwas received.

From what little I could get from the medical-ese there, it sounds as if they're saying tumors of this sort don't metastasise very quickly but they may reach into lymph nodes, etc when they do. Did they recommend a course of action? He's a beautiful little boy....

Ya we're still gonna wait and see what Dr. Pilny says, but basically ... it's a malignant tumor. This type doesn't usually metastasise or "spread" to vital organs, though it CAN and does in the later stages such as to the liver. (which has me worried about his jaundice situation)
The problem I see is that it's invasive locally, and from the research I've been doing on other rodents with this type of tumor they seem to have a high reccurrence rate after surgery. So we're a little bit sad today. :O(
Hoping for better news from Dr. Pilny than what I'm researching.
:grouphug I will be praying for squiz, he is such a cutie, sending my best wishes to you and Squiz...Pam
