I gaze into their eyes, sniff their heads, rub their noses with mine and kiss 'em all over. Yet somehow they all seem to go wild on me in the end, just the way they're supposed to. :D

one careful note:

not if you have a cold sore.

I know they're deadly to rabbits, i don't know about squirrels but i'd like it confirmed that they can't get the cold sore virus.

i need to post about this to ask a rehabber.

but i just wanted to let you know in case it's not a good idea.

thanks.

Good question, gs1! That would be helpful to know since the virus that causes a cold sore is a relative of the virus that causes chicken pox, therefore possibly related to the virus that causes sq pox. (Herpes virus)

Any input, rehabbers??

It's not an option, it's a requirement...

I'm trying to find the answer to this question and have found out that the viruses squirrels and rabbits get, including squirrel pox, are in the Poxveridae family of viruses, while the chicken pox and cold sores that we get are in the Herpesveridae family of viruses.

I don't know much about microbiology, but as far as I'm concerned, if I can risk getting leptospirosis, tularemia, salmonella, and a host of other zoonotic diseases from kissing them, then, by god, they're just going to have to risk getting something from me--because I just have to kiss each one on the noggin after every feeding (along with my mantra "Good squirrel!")! (I know, I'm selfish)
