I:thankyou have this male grey squirrel, who was hit by a car, for 3 weeks this past sat. He's been doing quite well but must have sustained a spinal cord injury effecting his back legs. He moves them involuntarily but doesn't weight bear. He is able to scoot around using his front legs for balance. I read thAT SQUIRRELS NEED CALCIUN AND SODIUM IN THEIR DIETS. If anyone could tell me what they need specifically, that would be helpful. He drinks plenty of water, eats fresh orange slices and a diet mix of seeds , corn etc. Thanks for your help.

Hi Mustang -
Squirrels require a special diet which you can find under the nutrition section... they recommend that you stay away from dry seed mixes (especially corn & sunflower seeds). The squirrel needs to be eating rodent block (Katee Forti Diet for Rats & Mice - you can find it at petsmart) or the squirrel block recipe that 4skwerlz has provided, also in the nutrition section. Their diet should also consist of fresh veggies & limited fruits & nuts (usually only as a treat).

Is this squirrel able to go to the bathroom on it's own? Usually, their bladders have to be expressed when they have paralysis issues.

Also they need special lighting which they can not get through the windows. I use an OTT-LITE/natural daylight for plants....The CRI(color rendering Index) must be at least 90/ the Kelvin at least 5,000 The one I got was from Home-Depot no where on the box did it give the CRI/Kelvin so I called the company and it surpasses the 90/5,000. You can find that info under nutrition too I think:thinking

:wave123 Glad to hear your little man is still with us. Bugsie can't use his back legs either, but he is lightning fast pulling his self with his front feet, especially on our hard wood floors. 4Skwerlz is awesome in the nutrition part, she sells the squirrel blocks, which are very nutritious and all squirrels love them.:thumbsup
