Hello everyone,
Has anyone here ever used the litter Yesterday's News in cages? I've attached some photos of Miss Lucy's cage and you can see that in the lower level I've been using corn cob which she likes and digs through, but it is not absorbent at all It doesn't absorb odors very well either and needs changing practically daily. I was wondering if I started using Yesterday's News if that would be safe?
Her cage is set up this way:
The top level is carpeted and is where she sleeps.

The lower two levels are considered her outdoor section, and the bottom tray is where I put corn cob. I'm considering using Aspen bedding and mixing that with a recycled paper bedding product that I get at Petco.

Any suggestions for using something better? I want to keep her happy and healthy.

I only have used newpapers on the bottom of the cage which I change every
morning, the hammocks are changed every week. I really don't have much of an odor.

Thanks! The cage is actually for ferrets, but Lucy loves it. I got the standard Ferret Nation cage and added the third level. I use the same one for my chinchillas too. I recommend it highly. The only negative is the pull out trays need to be deeper. They are currently only 1 inch in depth and the bedding gets kicked out all over the place. I make my own walls by weaving corrugated cardboard through the wiring, but they chew that up within a day. I've been contacting the manufacturer for 3 years requesting the deeper pans, but so far, no luck.

I use Yesterday's News in Sammy's litter box and know of another on TSB that also does. I don't have any personal experience with Aspen bedding but wouldn't use it because of the wood oils it contains.

I would not recommend using aspen bedding for any furry critter. Even though the oils in it are less irritating than cedar to little noses, it sometimes contains mite eggs that can hatch into nasty bloodsucking mites. A few years ago I had two gerbils that died from this. I also know someone who lost a rat this way.

Ewww...guess what is going straight into the garbage!! No more aspen bedding allowed in this household!:nono
Thank you everyone for replying.:thankyou My biggest concern was if she chewed on it and possibly ingested some. Your input was a huge help, and it seems like Yesterday's News is a relatively safe product that won't harm my little sweeties since some of you already use it.
