Hi Everyone
I was just curious about substituting babyfood for some fruits that may be out of season or just spoil so quickly? I have pear babyfood and i did give her a little bit(yikes) and she loved it, but she only gets some of that twice a week and the whole pear will go bad,and baby food seems fine in fridge or freezer, so is it fine to do that? Pear is her favorite treat and i love to get it for her, but the price will be going up as winter approaches and i still want her to have her treat. Also here is a pic of her new cage, my hubby is building a tray for the bottom right now and i have to hang her nest box and i want to finish hanging toys, but i took the pic first i was so happy. i like this because i can always build on if i want, it is actually two seperate rabbit hutches that i built together. she seems to love it!!! of course her favorite spot is still my shoulder or in my hair but this seems okay for her.
Another updated pic of Scraps, she brings so much joy to my life, she has shown zero signs of wilding up, is that normal, she is about 19 weeks old.:thankyou :thankyou

Aw, Scraps has grown so much . . . . I've never used baby food as a substitute for fruit or vegetables. I don't have a jar to look at, but if I were you I would check the sugar content vs natural fruit or vegetable. I don't know how much is added to baby food.
Your cage looks very nice and Scraps looks happy! Wilding up is pretty much an individual process but on average for a hand raised baby it would be 6-9 months. It seems to vary a little bit on the species of squirrel too. Are you planning on keeping Scraps or releasing her?

I use baby food for those that cannot eat, like my malacclusion baby.

I've been mixing in baby food veggies into the formula that I use to feed Christine. She is an adult head injury and cannot feed herself right now. I think Tomo and/or IR have also used baby food.....hopefully, one of them will chime in.
Your baby is beautiful! :grouphug
I use baby food for weaning and for non-releasable squirrels. I think they really like it. For some, I mix in formula, ground rodent block and a bit of molasses (high in calcium). Sometimes I also mix in almond meal for flavor. It also works well for camouflaging medicine when they won't take it. I try to stick with the organic versions when I can find them in the fruit/vegetable they like.
Hope this helps! Good luck with your little sweetheart!! :grouphug

I use baby food every day for Timothy...He is awfully picky about vegies but he seems to like the baby food....I do not give baby food fruit as I'm sure it contains alot of sugar...As for the vegitables here is what I found on my packs...each pack has 2-2.5 ounce...the ingredients for each is the vegitable and water..all suger is natural from the vegitable...
Peas...2g sugar
greenbeans...2g sugar
squash...4g sugar
sweet potatoe...6g sugar
I like the gerbers plastic containers...they come in a 2 pack with each pack being 2-2.5 ounces....I buy the smaller packs but they do make 4-4.5 ounce packs....I do not freeze them and I write the date on the plastic lids and then discard them after 3 days, per instructions...I'm sure it can probably be used for 4 or maybe 5 days but why take the chance? Has anyone used yours longer than 3 days?
I do however still offer him fresh vegies every evening..sometimes he eats them sometimes he doesn't but he always eats the baby food....
I give him about 1 tsp of each but not all 4 together...this way he can have variety each day...I do leave it for him all the time as he likes to pick, but I also do change it every few hours to keep it fresh....hopes this helps...

i have used the organic fruit also it says no added sugar but i never did check the actual amount, so i will check that out. She eats real veggies and fruits, but i like to keep the pear on hand just because it seems to go bad so quickly and since i live in MA i know the roads will get pretty crappy soon enough and i just wanted to make sure that i was not going to hurt her by giving that to her if i had to. If Scraps shows that she wants to go outside this spring, then I will let her go, and if she doesn't then I will not force her. I just want her to be happy and healthy. It will hurt so bad if she does decide to be an outdoor girl, but I will heal.
I got this cage so that if she decides to stay i can actually add on to it and make it bigger for her, so that she will have more room. We only use that room for the closet(storage) and our computer and the kids playstation that they never play!!!! So she will have plenty of room to spread out if she so chooses.
She eats really well, but she is no where near as fat as the wilds i see outside all the time, but she seems healthy and happy for now, so i am happy.

I sometime use baby food to get them started on the weaning process, but once they are betetr solid feeders, I remove it. Some of them like it, some of them don't.

Millie has to have baby food instead of the real deal because of her teeth. I just buy the organic kind. The others you have to watch because of added sugars and other chemicals and crap. Otherwise its fine. Millies favorite is the pair and carrots =)
