This is not my squirrel. My friends neighbor asked for help and she knew that I had squirrels. I'm already giving honey watered down with a small amount of calcium added. It seems to be helping a little. What else should I be doing besides keeping her warm.

I've already gotten about 1cc of the mixture into her. She seems to be perking up slightly.

What type of formula are you using? Or is this flyer already on solid food? How old is it and how much does it weigh?

MrBooMY
11-17-2008, 11:46 PM
It's an adult, unknown age but on solid food. Weighs 51 grams.

It will take a little while to digest, do you have any karo syrup of plain maple pancake syrup, just in case the honey isn't enough?

Is it just this one squirrel or does she have any others that could potentially have a problem?

MrBooMY

She has another one that is acting normal. They were feeding "squirrel food" from the store which I know is bad. I already told her it was bad, but I still have to deal with this. No karo or normal maple :(

I have never raised a flyer, let me see if I can find someone that can help. In the meantime do the same for her that you would a squirrel.

What does the squirrel food consist of?

MrBooMY
11-17-2008, 11:57 PM
You already know, corn, sunflower seeds, peanuts. BAD!!! I just added some pedialyte mix to it as well, she's perked up a little more yet.

Do you have any Esbilac powder you can mix up and give to it for some nutrition?

MrBooMY
11-17-2008, 11:59 PM
Of course, but it is still dehydrated. I figured I needed to rehydrate first.

Why do you think that it is dehydrated? Has it been getting water? Any other food besides the squirrel mixture?

If you have Esbilac, mix some up and use it!!

Boomy while your giving calcium out give some to the other flyer. It may not be showing signs yet but it will be soon.

She was definitley dehydrated. I'm over at my friend's house posting this because he had some items that I deemed very necessary. She just got .1cc of Neocalglucon. She has improved quite a bit and is now able to move around. He agrees that she most likely has MBD and he will be keeping her for the night as he has a better incubator than me, and he gets up earlier. I think she might make it if she lives through the night. It's looking good at the moment. I'll keep you guys updated.

I'm so sorry...just logged in now. This squirrel did not look healthy at all -- bad coat, listless eyes. I would urge this individual to get with the program before his/her other flyer succumbs in the same way. Go to the nfsa website and everything you need about flyer nutrition is right there.

I will be in that neck of woods one day this week, if I can help let me know!
Sorry that the little flyer babe didn't make it!:grouphug

So sorry this poor little flyer did not make it. RIP little one :Love_Icon

I agree your friend's other flyer is in imminent danger from this same diet! MrB, I know you are aware we have wonderful rehabber resources in the JAX area and we can arrange to transfer your friend's remaining flyer(s?) to someone who can give the immediate emergency care that might save a life.

Can you convince your friend to turn the flyer over to someone who can save its life? I am sure the death of the first flyer must be weighing very heavy and would be a horrible thing to go through. But TIME IS LIFE and the other flyer doesn't have much time.

If I can help at all with logistics of getting the flyer to one of our experienced rehabbers, please send me a PM and I will do all I can to make connections.

So sorry the little one didn't make it. Thank you for trying, and do ask if you can have the other one for a week just to make sure it is not ill! (which it probably is)

I'm getting her other flyer later today. I promise that I'll take good care of it, and the first thing it's going to get is plenty of calcium. It's probably not far behind it's sibling. I'm just glad she made the right choice to either learn how to take proper care or let someone take it that knows proper care. I've already got plenty of Mazuri Rodent Block.

I now have the other flyer in my possession. I'm pretty sure it's a female also. She's still moving normally. I took all the "squirrel mix" out of the cage and replaced it with Mazuri Rodent Block, and 5 acorns (I know she doesn't need them, but you should have see how happy she got). I'm going to get some good veggies for her soon. The cage was poorly kept as seen in the pictures. I'm cleaning it after I finish this post. The smell is horrendous.

S/He is precious. Sad how some people house animals...it's not to hard to keep a cage clean, and I'm happy to see you are taking care of the dirty cage etc. Keep us posted on her and your other babies.

See if you can't get by here. We have a lot of meal worms for our flyer-Tiny. We can share, don't know your money situation at the moment. See what we can do to hurry this one's recovery. :grouphug

Well, this is a good start. I'm glad your friend agreed to part with this little one. But she needs more than just a switch to rodent block, though. Looks can be deceptive -- with the same poor diet as the one that died, she will be very calcium deficient and needs to be on a "make-up diet" to get her boosted up to where she needs to be.

Have you been able to get much calcium into her? (I know the "MBD Diet" says 600 mg for the first day, but that is for greys -- :thinking perhaps someone can suggest what the appropriate dosage for an adult flyer might be -- I know they are tiny but no idea what they might weigh --- anybody???) Will she eat any of the foods recommended in Gammas post about MBD-Week One, so you can mix the calcium in? Any luck with the Mazuri? It's going to be an uphill struggle to get enough calcium in her.

As I mentioned, there are rehabbers in the your area who have experience treating squirrels that have been poorly fed/cared for and we could help you with arrangements to transfer this flyer to one of them.

this little girl is so sweet outside of her cage. i hand to use a glove just to get her out. now she is hanging out in my shirt. she will be use to us in no time. when she got her i had mixed some baby food with repcal and she went nuts over it. she is slightly smaller then my 10 week old female flyer. but she has to be less the a year old

So have you been able to contact a local rehabber or a vet to have her condition professionally checked out?

I'm sorry to say that the second girl is dying right now in my hand. We did everything that we possibly could. She was getting plenty of extra calcium and she seemed to be doing well, but she is now gasping for breath and there is nothing else I can do. :( :madd God I wish people would educate themselves about an animal before they buy it!! :sanp3 I'm so very sorry that this one is following the same path. Poor sweet baby. :Love_Icon

We knew this flyer was in grave danger from poor diet when the other one died. I know I was hoping that this one could be saved with MBD treatment, but it was apparently already too late. Thank you so much for trying, for convincing your friend to give her up, and for cleaning her cage and giving her a clean and comfy place to be these last couple of days, and letting her enjoy a tummy full of GOOD stuff. I am truly sorry that she is dying on your watch; it is from her prior poor care before you got her.
