I found a exercise wheel large enough for our gray, but she only runs through it! Anyone had any luck w/ one? She has so much energy, I hoped it could keep her busy.....

Running wheels are not good for greys.....they get thier tails caught and it is very traumatic for them...and you too.
They need a large cage 4x4x8 if you are going to over winter them. Outside and freedom...age pemitting & weather permitting....are the best choice for a healthy squirrel. :thumbsup
I actually have a running wheel with small enough holes and that is big enough they cannot get the tails caught. I tried it last season with older babies but they didn't take to ti but this seasons babies LOVE IT! They just run and run and play and they are in a big cage with outdoors access but come back to run in the wheel...

Running wheels are not safe because of the way they are made unless you get a large solid metal side attaching wheel, even if they need to be large. I would say no less then 14 inches other wise the squirrel can damage spinal areas running arched the wrong way. I haven't heard of many squirrels using them.
The small holes also can cut up their toes and run them raw along with catching their nails. Not a good idea.Squirrels don't run like most rodents either.
A better idea if you really have to have a wheel or want to try something is a flying saucer. Its more flat for a more natural run.

the saucer looks cool....I think the wheel I got is about 16 inches across? Pretty big I didn't think they would use it...someone gave it to me to try no idea where they got it. Didn't say it was a good idea just that perhaps a squirrel would have to be young to learn to use it and I agree that they do not run like other rodents do.
