View Full Version : Adult female grey-dog attack

Anne
11-05-2008, 03:20 PM
My vet called today and I went and picked up an adult female squirrel that came in yesterday rescued from a dog attack. The vet did give her fluids and they cleaned her up, but they didn't try to feed her. I got about 2 cc of fluid in her here. She acts like a pet squirrel, doesn't try to bite, appears to like being held and loved on. But-she is constantly curled into a tight ball, doesn't want to eat, drink, move, etc. Outwardly she looks good, no puncture wounds, just some dried blood on her nose and lips and some blood matted fur inside her right hind leg. I have her on a heating pad and am keeping her warm.
Here are some pictures taken just minutes ago. If this isn't deemed "life Threatening" please move the thread.

I think you are looking at a head injury and possible internal injuries. Is there any blood in the stool?

Do you hav any Homeopathic remedies??

Anne

Mars, This is the squirrel from Sandy R's post. I haven't seen any stools or urine since I've had her. I think it is a head and neck injury. I didn't receive any meds with her and only have squirrel antibiotics and pain meds here. I will go and get anything I can to help her. I rehab for several vets, not just Dr. A. We have an excellent health store here just down the street, it's family owned and operated.

Good call, Mars....I was thinking that, unless the photographer caught the exact same expression in every single shot, her eyes look dull, or half-lidded as in head trauma of some kind. :dono I will move this thread to Non Life-Threatening.

God bless you, Anne! Thank you for taking her in! I'm surprised there weren't any puncture wounds, as there was a good deal of blood on the pavement where I found her lying. She also couldn't really walk yesterday. When I saw her move at all, it would just be to roll around, and she mainly stayed in that curled up position.

I hate to think my dog did this, but since I found her by our back steps, that's likely what happened. I'll be glad to help pay for some of her meds, and hereby give my permission for the board supervisor to send you my e-mail if you want to contact me privately.

Update: :thumbsup Jane had a fairly good night thanks to Mars suggesting a remedy. She was a bit more alert this morning, tho still in a tight ball. I gave her another dose of Mars's remedy and then she took 6cc of warm formula. Jane even took two steps when I placed her back into the carrier. I will feed her several times today when we feed the babies, but I really think she needs rest and fluids more than anything. Her head, neck and right shoulder still seem swollen. She just wants to sleep. She is where I can see her almost constantly so is checked regularly without bothering her.

I don't know how what I said was mistaken, but I just wanted to visit Anne. I was in no way suggesting that I wanted to take the squirrel. I don't know why everyone on this board likes to be so critical of me, but it's getting old. I didn't see anyone opening their mouth about the lady that had 50 babies.

Don't worry, MrBooMy and I are personal friends also. We both love squirrels and we love having him visit us. We, my son and I, would love any and every body to call have a cuppa and visit---all squirrel lovers are welcome.

Jane had a couple of drops of Mar's remedy this morning and then 6ccs of formula. She took 9ccs this afternoon and felt well enough to bite the washcloth used for her bath:) Still in a ball, still peeing and pooing on her tee shirt, but appears more alert. Just keeping her warm, dry, quite. Waiting. Right side still swollen and stiff. This little fighter is gonna make it:crazy

Awe Mr. BooMy I didn't take what digi said as critical of you, she just knows you have your hands full...between work, play and your babies she was just concerned...no harm intended! I know digi is concerned for this squirrel and needs to be with a experience rehabber with access to a vet for proper care and treatment. You raised the question wondering who would get the squirrel, so naturally we would have to ask ourselves "why when a squirrel is getting treatment would she need to go to another home!" No big deal...I don't think anybody took it personal the way you did :poke :D

Glad the squirrel appears to be improving. She looks so sweet :D

Oh, no. I definitely wasn't taking it personally. Just explaining our friendship.
I will be able to get meds from the vet who first saw Jane, or one of the others (3) I work with as needed. I was very worried yesterday that no meds were sent home with her and I felt frustrated that I couldn't help her more last night. I am getting a list together to have on hand for future use:D I had antibiotics here but that's not what she needed.
All 19 of my others from this year have been healthy(thank God). I especially want to get with Mar's and have some Homeopathic medicines here on hand also.
Like all of us I just want what's best for the squirrels. Also I always throw out of date or undated medications out. After more than 20 years of helping squirrels and people as a nurse, I just like to be prepared (ex-girl scout too!).
Yesterday I felt very inadequate and unsettled. Feelings I don't like!
I love and respect everyone here:grouphug :grouphug :Love_Icon :Love_Icon :grouphug

I just got off the phone with SandyR who found our Jane. I think since talking with her that I am dealing with a head injury and not a dog attack. No puncture
wounds and blood only around her nose and mouth when I got her. Her young dog just ignored the squirrel when Sandy went out and first saw the squirrel. Jane was pretty bloody when found. I still can't find any wounds on her body, just cleaned off what was left on her face and nose and right hind inter thigh. I really inspected her very closely today. I have been letting her sleep all afternoon and am getting ready to feed her and the babies in a few minutes.
I expect to hear more from Mars later tonight.Jane appears to be a toughie!:Love_Icon :Love_Icon

After talking with Anne about Jane's injuries, I think my husband and I have figured out what happened. We have a very tall cedar tree close to our house, and lately it appears to be dying. Brown twigs and some branches have been dropping in a way I haven't seen in previous years. Given that the tree extends over where we found Jane, and the nature of her injuries, I'm almost certain that she either fell from the tree somehow or a branch broke beneath her. The lowest limbs of the tree are higher than our house, which is a 2-story, so she took quite a plunge. If she landed on the pavement where I found her, and not in the dirt by the tree, it's a wonder to me that she lived. But it would explain the blood, the apparent head trauma, the lack of puncture wounds, and how she mostly seems to be hurt on one side.

Needless to say, we'll have to get the tree checked and removed if it's dying. Not just for the squirrels, of course, but it's too close for comfort!

Jane is improved, still sleeps a lot, still prefers to be a ball. However she is eating a fortified formula from the syringe like there is no tomorrow:crazy The past three feedings she has lapped up 21 to 24ccs at a time. Wish she would use a bowl-but I love holding her. I am going today to try just baby veggies, vitamins in water. Think she has had enough goat's milk formula for an adult. I can always go back. I intend to get new pictures and weight her tomorrow. So cuddly for a wild squirrel:D

I thought squirrels weren't supposed to have goat's milk. Is that just baby squirrels?

MrBooMY
11-07-2008, 11:53 PM
Goat's milk is perfectly safe. I used it to raise several of my babies. I just had less trouble with the runs on Esbilac. If you overfeed with Goat's milk at least in my experience it caused the runs quickly. It did work though when I was really broke and had some babies to feed. It's much better than them starving or getting cow's milk.

FallensMommie
11-09-2008, 06:59 AM
Just incase somebody comes on browsing the forum to help a baby squirrel in need....Esbilac Pupply Milk Replacer is the recommended milk replacer for proper nutrition and proper growth. Goats milk is not recommended for baby squirrels as it doesn't have the necessary fat to protein ratio required.

I don't know if this has occurred to anyone else but Jane may prefer to stay curled in a ball because she has a back/spine injury and it hurts her to straighten out. (I've had sciatica twice; I stayed in a ball, too.) If she can be really examined and x-rayed by a prominent vet like Dr Lightfoot (her background is very similar to our beloved Dr Pilny's here in NY) I wouldn't hesitate to get her there. Pain may be what keeps her from moving normally, but squirrels are prey animals and they will not show they're hurt if they can help it. Jackie, that's an awesome offer! :bowdown

Met with Jackie without incident and on time. Jackie planned to take Jane directly to vet before appt time to have her checked out asap. She then planned on calling as soon as she has ANY news.

My parrot suffered a fall several years ago and suffered a head injury, with significant blood loss. At the emergency vet we were told that the blood loss, though scary, was not a big deal. Birds have air pockets in their skulls which help with flight. Apparently these fill with blood and it was this blood that spilled. Since squirrels are also often airborne, it may be that they are built the same way? Worth asking the vet about.

Our parrot ( a double yellow amazon) has yellow and red eyes so it is easy to see anything unusual in it. One of Milo's got very bloodshot so we aren't certain. but we think the blood came from his nose, which was also bloody.

Other than also badly breaking his wing, which now has limited movement, he had a complete recovery, and remarkably quickly. I hope the same happens for this sweetie.

After talking with Anne about Jane's injuries, I think my husband and I have figured out what happened.

I think that makes a lot of sense. I'll be watching this thread and I really hope once the swelling goes down you don't discover she has something permanent going on.

Jackie (just) called me on her way home so I could post an update, since it will be a while 'til she feeds everyone and gets to the computer. Here's what she said:

Jane got a very thorough going over by Dr. Y, Amy (vet tech) and Jackie, who was allowed to stay and participate. Jane was very cooperative and docile. They found nothing at all wrong with her body -- beautiful squirrel body, everything works. She walks, pees, gives armage(!:) )

They examined her teeth, which are perfect/no malo. BUT found that her tongue is quite bruised and the split in her upper lip seems too exaggerated, so her top teeth are too easily visible. And she has scars down the right side of her face (not formula burn, but scars). So they are thinking she had a face/mouth injury, perhaps biting her own tongue in the process -- who knows what cause? perhaps a fall and striking a branch?? In any event, it was a very good move on Anne's part to give her formula :bowdown , since Jane probably couldn't have eaten anything solid. If she is still bruised now, then her mouth would have been quite sore when she first arrived at Anne's.

They also noticed a very tiny head tilt. Jackie is to monitor carefully to see if she always tilts and if it is always the same direction.

Anne had noticed a thick pasty substance on Jane's belly when she cleaned her, which she thought might be pus but could not find any wound or source for it. The vet could not find any possible wound or source either and wonders if it might be regurgitated formula, particularly in light of a possible mouth injury that could affect how she swallows.

Jane has gone home with Jackie, along with Baytril and metacam. The Baytril because they are concerned she might have a puncture in her mouth that they couldn't see today. The metacam because the suspected mouth injury is probably still causing her pain. Perhaps why she curls up. Whatever the cause, hopefully the metacam will help her feel better. :grouphug

Jane has a Thursday appointment as well, with Dr. Lightfoot herself (who was on vacation today but was in consultation with Dr. Y). If there is no improvement by then, they may want to (very briefly) knock Jane out in order to look more closely at the inside of her mouth and possibly take Xrays at that time.

[Speaking of improvement -- :thinking Anne, your morning post mentioned that she had shown improvement this morning and I wondered in what respect? So that Jackie can look for further progress!]

On the cost front, today's initial exam was $178. Thursday will be more, depending whether it includes anesthesia and Xrays it could be another $350. (Just passing that info along for any of you who are inclined to and able to help with the costs -- see Pam's thread for details)

That's all I know.

Oh, wait! There is more --- Jane had company for the ride home from the vet's office. :D Jackie now has another flier to care for :crazy , and will no doubt be introducing "AJ" to you all very soon!

Jane walked around her carrier this morning :) to take care of her morning buznes. First time I had seen her walk on her own. Jane also walked around a little on my lap at breakfast, two firsts in one day:crazy
I miss having her here, just 2 babies to feed this afternoon and night. No lovings to give, no squirrelly massages (sigh). Hope Jane gives Jackie some furball sugar, and is a good girl; Jackie must be exhausted and a new baby to care for too.
Jackie, I can never thank you enough for what you are doing. Jane won't have had this type of care up here. I do believe your heart is so big that if an angel whispered-"love you" into it, that your heart would echo.

:wave123 Anne! Jane is in very good hands tonight -- busy hands, but well cared for. :)

That's interesting that she only started walking around this morning. Jackie had mentioned that Jane came out to pee on the towel, then went back in her blankies and then came out a bit later to explore, look around and then lounge on top of the blankies. It all sounded so ... normal! I didn't realize that those were VERY BIG STEPS for Jane, and I don't think Jackie realized it either. That's so wonderful! :wott i I hope she just keeps on improving. :thumbsup

Jane continues to improve. :thumbsup She curls her tail over her body now and moves around more. She stretches her head UP now, even arching her back, to check things out above her. And lunges! Jackie says her wildness is starting to show, which is a good thing. I heard Jane growl/grumble and Jackie says she's been chattering her teeth :D Also good -- and means her mouth is working a bit more normally now.

She's been eating well (her "formula" that Anne had been giving her was actually formula-PLUS, including baby food, oatmeal, vitamins, so she's gotten good nutrition even with her liquid diet :thumbsup ) Jackie is continuing that, and also tried her on some soft foods to see how she does -- pulverized acorn and pecan, and a little avocado -- and Jane seemed to do well with that. She's also now getting yogurt. So far, so good. :)

Jane is acting more territorial -- giving Jackie the business when she puts her hand in her carrier. :shakehead Trying to be a scary squirrel --- until Jackie touches her and loves on her, then she's all :Love_Icon and gives armage. :Love_Icon But as soon as Jackie's done it's "Grrrrr ... OUT of my space!" :rotfl Too funny. :rotfl

Now that she's not staying curled up, Jackie is going to take her out tonight and let her walk around and see how she does. Maybe move her into a bigger space tomorrow so she can get a little activity if she's ready for it.

It really does seem like yesterday was a turning point for her, as Anne noted in the morning. We hope that she keeps on improving. :alright.gif :alright.gif

Thanks all for contributing to Janes adventure and future!
ThanksBsMom for typing and staying in contact.
Thanks Anne and Chaz for taking such great care of her, I was so impressed that she was not skin and bones, it is hard to keep a sq looking so good on a liquid diet:thumbsup We are all lucky she is a sweet girl...she bite me! But that is great! Her mouth is feeling better, and she is eating better also! But still taking her Shake de Anne! She actually loves it!:alright.gif
MOUTH TRAMA is what Dr.Yeager said, probably not electrical...
She had an appt today, but Amy, Dr.Lightfoots tech has rescheduled for friday, I will observe her more. At first we were concerned about her movement. But she has improved so fast, that I wasn't expecting what I am seeing..she is a fighter...I am hoping that she mends enough to be released back into the wild:alright.gif
Anne I think you're right about her feeling better "just like a kid" on the day of Dr. appt!:rotfl
I do know that the meds have speeded her recovery and comfort beyond all expected. She is feisty, but after her meds, she gets very tipsy/woozy...cute and drunk! then passes out.
I still have no internet, but will post pictures later, I forgot to bring my camera cord to sons! :shakehead
Sorry I missed you this morning Anne and Chas...will call later! Thanks you two! Awesome JOB with Jane!:bowdown :bowdown

Jane continues to improve :thumbsup :multi (and Jackie continues to be w/o internet :shakehead ).

No more head tilt observed. Jane moved into a larger cage today and appears to love it. Her carrier would not fit into the new cage, so she has a cardboard box with lots of blankies, etc. and immediately claimed it as her own. She has lots of greenery/limbs (tree trimmmers were in the neighborhood :soapbox but Jackie at least scarfed up some good limbs to recycle to the squirrels). Jackie has seen Jane climb around on the sides of the cage, but not the top. She has not done that squirrelly-hanging-thing ..... yet.

Food -- continues to eat well. As a test, Jackie put acorns, a pecan and couple of almonds (all IN the shell) in Jane's cage. The acorns have been shelled and devoured. :flash3 The other nuts disappeared -- Jackie is listening for nut cracking sounds to come from inside Jane's box. :)

Jane has really dramatically improved and looks (fingers crossed here) like she might be on her way to full recovery. Still on her meds, and still under observation. Looking less likely that anesthesia and xrays will be needed since she is improving so much on her own. :wahoo :wahoo

Jackie also sent this message (posted so she doesn't have to re-type):

Jane is in my shirt and very content! She is about to have breakfast if I can get her out to eat...she is snuggled in! So cute and sweet!
Still has a spot of drainage on her belly, so better to give her more time to heal in her big cage! I see improvement everyday!

The "drainage" is now believed to be from her mouth -- belly spot is where Jane's mouth rests when she curls up to sleep. :)

The present plan is for return to Anne this week, for releasing Jane back to her Home territory (SandyR's yard) -- we believe Jane will be thrilled to go HOME! :thumbsup (as much as she has enjoyed her stays with Anne/Chas and Jackie, and appreciates the care she has received to save her live ... :bowdown :Love_Icon )

Jane Update!:D
First of all Thank you to all involved with Janes progress!
Sweet Jane is a great patient, she is so loving and understanding.I have not been bitten in three days!:thumbsup
Jane is doing better. Her mouth has regained it's pink color with a small bruise barely visible on her upper gums, above her incisors.
She has just started climbing...I was secretly sooo worried! Finally I feel relieved! She is even climbing on other sq cages, like they do hers...her mouth feels alot better, she is chattering her teeth. She is also chewing wood on inside of her cage! and eating nuts!
We are taking one day at a time.
I have stopped her meds and I am moitoring her closely.Time will tell!

Our original plans were to return her to her old stomping grounds in Sandy Rs back yard....but with her slow progress, I am not sure when that will be.
I was hoping that someone would give advise on that...if she remains here to heal and goes outside in her cage like my spring releases do,and sees my backyard and seeing that I am her care giver and she is so comfortable with me...is it advisable to take her back to where she was familiar or release her here, where she is getting familiar?
If she is indeed releasable. Time will tell on the latter. I am outside everyday and if she needs us, I think she would accept our help. At the same time...if she had a mother or siblings...I would want her to be with them too! :thinking :dono
Jane is NOT an adult sq...she is maybe 6 or 7 months old is my guess.
Fred built her a wooden box/bed...she has been investigating it! He also built her a real nestbox for the future!
Here are pics from this morning...
Jane sends hugs and kisses....XOXOX
thanks again:wave123

Oh, Jackie, is was wonderful to read an update on sweet Jane! She looks so much better....but I understand about needing time to REALLY evaluate....you certainly don't want to do anything to jeopardize her progress.

I'm wondering since she IS becoming so used to you as her caregiver, might it not be less stressful to eventually release her in your yard - if, in fact, she CAN end up being released?
