I was looking on line, and did not find any laws in the state of MI that prohibited possessing squirrels.
The only thing I found that was prohibited was owning potentially vicious animals who could do great bodily harm. They listed animals such as wolves, large felines and large snakes.
Does anyone know of any laws in MI that I should be aware of regarding squirrels that I may not have found on line?
Thanks,
Michelle

They are illegal in MI without a permit. I will honestly say that MOST of us on here have raised baby squirrels that have been illegal to have. I wouldn't let it worry you too much. I just wouldn't advertise that you have one. :) Agencies are not going to go door to door looking to see if someone has a squirrel. Your biggest problem with it being illegal, will be finding a vet, if you should need one. Most will not treat squirrels, or do they know how, if they aren't exotic vets.
Not being in MI, I have no idea how you would obtain a permit, and I personally, wouldn't worry about it. When you try to get something like this, that tips people off that you have the baby, and in many States, they will confiscate the baby, and destroy it immediately. :(
No problem in the vet dept. 2 of the vets at the local clinic I go to are friends of mine, and they will treat anything that's an animal..... they even treated a wild turkey once that we accidentally hit with our 3 wheeler! And it made it... it had a bruised wing and we released it a week later. Wild turkeys are UGLY, and not at all smart like this squirrel is..LOL.:flash3

:Welcome Just reading on your thread about this matter. So very glad to hear you have friendly supportive Vet to help you if needed with your baby! Some folks are so afraid of seeking for Vets in States that these squirrels are by code not legal to possess, yet as you have found, many of these States do have Vets who are willing to care for pet squirrels. To them a pet is a pet, not being hypocritical as many of the laws are in that regards to having them in one's care, since true exotics are in fact guinea pigs hamster, gerbils, and sugar gliders, yet all of them are legal, not to mention all the parrots and other birds that our Country imported in the past. Most States do have laws just like your State does, listing animals dangerous to have, and so such are not to be in anyone's possession without a license for good reason, but as for helping orphaned squirrels, who then does that hurt, surely not the squirrel if then it receives proper care. Glad that you've found TSB, and we are able to help support you in caring for your baby squirrel! :)

I could use some direction since I'm not too sure it is TRULY illegal to have a flying squirrel in Michigan without a permit. Everything I read from the DNR states things like "...the following game animals..." and the application is very clear that the permit is for captive GAME animals, with a few exceptions listed. Flyers (although not endangered) are nongame animals. However, flyers are considered by DNR officers to be illegal without a permit? Where is the law that requires a permit for nongame flying squirrels?
