I think I'm gonna lose my sweet boy Blaze. He's 5 weeks old was weighting 98grams he's lost down to 84grams in just a couple of days. I have tried everything to get his diarrhea under control. He was on full strength formula and had perfect poos only 3 days ago. He has 2 fingers that are swollen, a back foot he has only limited use of and a broke tail. He was pretty healthy weight and hydration wise when I got him, I've had him since the 8th. He fell from his nest and had a bloody nose. Was doing great until the swelling in his toes. As long as I have him on hydration fluids his diarrhea is light yellow liquid and as soon as I try even very diluted formula it looks like cottage cheese. There's not really a smell but his little butt and legs stay nasty and wet. I really need some ideas of what to try. PLEASE, I really want to pull Blaze through this he's already been through soooo much. I have him on a heating pad and he's on SMZ/TMP cause of the swelling in his toes.

Have you tried giving him some Kaolin Pectin? Is there a possibility it could be parasites? Do you have any injectable B-12?

You may want to give him some supplements to help him absorb the proper nutrients into his system, such as L-Glutamine, acidophilus, and Prozyme.
You can get L-Glutamine from Wal-Mart, any drug store, health food store, or at Chris's squirrelsandmore.
If you have a Petco around you, you can also get Prozyme. I'm not sure if other stores carry it or not. You can always call and ask.
Put a big pinch of each of these in her formula that you make up for the day (in other words, only add it once to her daily formula intake, not at each feeding). These are not drugs, but supplements, so you do not need an exact measurement.
L-Glutamine.......http://www.squirrelsandmore.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_id=1816
If you can only find this in capsules, that's fine too. Just break it open, and go from there. :thumbsup
Prozyme......http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.aspx?familyid=13434&Ntt=prozyme&OneResultRedirect=1
If you can't find the Prozyme, you can also add bioplasma to your formula. One tablet twice a day for a bit. Bioplasma ( also called cell salts or bio salts ) can be found in health food stores. ( not GNC )
Here is what acidophilus looks like, and what it does.

MANY prayers going out to PRECIOUS little Blaze....:grouphug :Love_Icon :grouphug
Thanks Gamma, I am using the Bioplasma and Acidophilus. I have the L-Glutamine but have not used it and I don't have the prozyme.

All of the items Gamma and I have listed would possibly be good things to use for him and wonderful things to have on hand. You may have to get the injectqble B-12 from a vet, I do. I give {.02cc /B12 and.03cc /PenG Sub-Q,}(make sure you lay the syringe in a cup of very water before you give the shot so not to cool off his body temperature. If you get a good response, try the same thing again in 1 hour or so. This just gives his immune system a boost to fight off whatever is going on and the PENG helps it along. I'll think about this some more and see if I can come up with anything else.

You said he was doing well until the swelling in his toes, is that when you started the SMZ/TMP? Maybe that is causing the diarrhea. If you feel you need a antibiotic try using baytril instead of any cillins. I would also try all the suppliments that gammas suggested.
Coccidia is also a possibility.

OK I'm reading the side affects list that comes on the information slip on the bottle of SMZ/TMP and the most common side affect is diarrhea. Take him off it and get some probotics into him.
I hope he's ok, prays and hugs :grouphug for you both.

Hi PL, I was also wondering if the abx were causing the diarrhea. How is he today?

Get the DMG from Chris's it saved my squirrel when he started crashing.
I would recomend every rehabber get it period,
One drop a day per hundred grams. The prozyme & the glut helped but this product is what saved my guy.
Instant energy and formed bm's.
DMG has demonstrated the ability to enhance humoral and cell-mediated immune responses. It has not only been used to enhance immune system function but also to improve neurological function and to enhance anti-viral and anti-bacterial defenses.

The SMZ/TMP is not a cillin and should NOT cause diarrhea. I have used it on MANY squirrels and never had trouble and it is one of the few meds. that is safe for bunnies, who have the most sensitive stomachs of any creatures I know. So, I vote keep him on the SMZ/TMP :thumbsup . Have you tried putting him on the esbilac and keeping him on it even after the poop is like cottage cheese? Perhaps it will just take a little while for his system to get used to the switch. He really needs the formula.
How is his activity level? Does he act sick or is it just the diarrhea and weight loss that is worrying you? Is he drinking his fluids willingly or are you forcing him to eat?

The diarrhea started before the antibiotics.
Rippie, I have already ordered that. Sissy and I talked for a long time the other night and she said to order it. So I did.
SR&BT, Yes I've been giving him the formula anyway cause I know he needs the calories. Yes he acts sick but he does nurse well.

PL, how is Blaze?
Not any better. Now my baby Snoopy has the same cottage cheese diarrhea and his brother Gizmo's is getting loose. These 2 have never had a problem in the poop area. Snoopy and Gizmo are in a different nursery container then Blaze and I'm very careful about washing everything so I don't cross contaminate anything, just in case it was something they could get. The only thing that is new and common among the babies is their formula, I had just opened a new container of Esbilac when this all started. Do ya'll think there could be something wrong with this can? I could be just grasping at straws but right now that's all I got. Peanut and Punkin are both eating the same formula and they are both totally fine. They are also 12 and 9 weeks old and eating alot of solids so maybe it wouldn't effect them the same way. I took all the little guys off the formula and gave just pedialyte at their last feeding and will be buying a new can of Esbilac first thing in the mornin'. Keep your fingers crossed that this is the answer. If ya'll really think this is a long shot just let me know so I can be working on something else. I'm still waiting on the DMG.
