I am sorry to post a thread that does not concern a problem with one of my little guys, but I just found something horrifying on the internet and I need to vent. People are selling baby squirrels for $150.00 dollars..... these creatures take as much care as an infant and if not cared for just right, they will DIE. Do they not care...these are living, breathing things, not objects to be bought and sold for someone to tote around as a pet!!!! Well, thanks guys for letting me vent. I wish there was something I could do. If I had the money, I would buy them ALL and take care of them the way they should be. I'm sure this happen's more then we know about and it makes me SICK!!!!:shakehead

No I see what you are referring to. I'm looking into it right now as Alabama is in the illegal state for having squirrels but looking into any stipulations pertaining to it.

I called Alabama wildlife and they stated squirrels are illegal...except reds as they aren't native. I said they will be soon if that is what she is selling and when they wild up and are released they will be natives soon :poke If they are any other squirrels they are not to be possessed or sold. Somebody is going to lose money as they are going to wild and they will have to be released, so hopefully in the end the squirrels win :D Poor babies being raised and sold....at the age they are being sold at I doubt they will ever bond anyways but to each other...somebody is going to have their hands full :shakehead I am assuming these are reds as they were listed under reds, but then again who knows :dono

How true the comment you posted is... I had to turn down MANY jobs because the hours did not coordinate with thier feeding schedule. I was finally able to accept a job 6 blocks from home, where I am able to run home on my lunch break to feed them. They are ALOT of work and our schedules are planned COMPLETLEY around them. It is not all fun and games, it is a gift from the heart!!!!

I sure wish that Alabama wildlife place could email them with a warning or something maybe that would nip that kind of thing in the bud, however, Now that the jerk has made money and sees he can he will prob just go hunting for nests to rob now.:(

Heidi, I read the blog. A guy named Chuck on there post 63 I believe, has a squirrel that has paralysis issues. Is there anyway to contact him to share what he needs to do for now to care for this squrirel, till he can find a rehabber in his area, or at least come on our board to ask? I believe he is in WI.

Just to let ya'll know, I'm 20 miles(if that) from the lady in Clanton, AL. I signed up and emailed her that I'm interested in the squirrels and needed to know what kind she's selling. So hopefully she will get back to me. I'll play nice untill I find out where she is and I'm pretty sure she isn't licensed to sell them. If she still has them I won't be able to turn her in right away cause I wouldn't want them confiscated and destroyed, so I guess I'll just buy them and put in an anonymous complaint after I have them. If she's already sold them illegally I'll make a copy of the ad and call the gamewarden.

Pamala Lee, be careful because someone already posted on that site to join TSB for information on how to care for the squirrels. Someone from there might read your post and alert everyone.

Does anyone know what a Richardson ground squirrel is? I just came across a ad on craigs list for one in Queens NY. The guy is selling it for $200. Is this a legal pet or is it an actual squirrel?

Richardson's Ground Squirrels
(Spermophilus richardsonii)
Richardson's ground squirrels are known by a variety of names, including gophers, prairie gophers, yellow gophers, picketpins, flickertails, and tawny American marmots. They are sometimes confused with their relatives the prairie dogs. But whatever they may be called, Richardson's ground squirrels are still the same, delightful animals they have always been.
A member of the squirrel family in the order Rodentia, Richardson's ground squirrels make their home in the northern plains of North America. They are diurnal, obligate hibernators that live out most of their lives in underground burrows.

Thanks foxsquirrels. Do you know if they are legal to sell in NYC. This guy is posting on craigs list and I'm afraid if someone turns him in they will get confiscated and euthanized. I dont know if I should call the guy and tell him to remove the ad.

I have seen these on my trip to North Dakota, just outside the National Buffalo Museum in Jamestown, on some high rocky ground. They look like miniature versions of the Prairie dog. The juveniles play outside the burrows in the morning, tumbling and rolling around;they just couldn't be more cute rolly pollys! The one site I saw, stated they were adopted by permit, but that was not in N.Y. I dont' know if they are legal to sell in N.Y. with a permit, or not, or legal to own there either.

I got an Email from the lady selling squirrels in Clanton, AL. She has sold the ones she had. She has Flying squirrels. She sells the babies when her pet Flyers have them.

I went to the New York State website and it says it is illegal to own Native Species in New York and Lions, Raccoon Dogs, Wolves, Wolf/dog hybrids and "anything that can be mistaken for a wolf". Would think that Cayotes would be on that list too since they have a problem with them.
I did a search for a list of illegal "wildlife" and nothing came up except the above. I bet Island Rehabber would know for sure.
Very strange site. Florida is weird but at least they breakdown wildlife into classes and tell you which ones you need a permit for. I think the Richardson Ground Squirrel is safe, and for those out there who love Prairie Dogs the ban was lifted last month so you will be seeing ad's for them again probably next spring after baby season.
