That is so funny - not many people south of VA know what a buckeye is....when Ohio State played down here everyone wondered what the *$&# a buckeye was!:crazy

I don't know about squirrels, but my nanny always told me buckeyes were poisonous for people to eat. Not much help, I know:dono but, hey GB, at least I've heard of one:poke :flash3 :D

They are really beautiful nuts; we had them in SW Va. when I was growing up. The nuts, unshelled, look like mahogany and very shiny. They have a round, brown spot on the end; if you've ever seen the chocolate candy called 'buckeyes' (although you probably don't live where they make it if you don't have the trees:D ) they look just like that. Could I have made that clarification any cloudier???:crazy

So they're little poisonous nuts that people model candy after. o.O That's like putting candy in a pill bottle. :nono

Ok, I am amazed the GB does not know what a buckeye is? I thought you knew it all!! :dono :rotfl :rotfl

Anyway, here's a link to what a buckeye is:

And, here's the link to the yummy human ones, and they are easy to make:

Last, but definitely not least, grey squirrels in Ohio love buckeyes! They are related to horsenuts/chestnuts.

And a link for a bunch of other info about Buckeyes:

:grouphug from a Buckeye who was transplanted South! :crazy

GM...what about tossing the nut in rep-cal? would that even out the ratio?:poke
You can give a Brazil nut every once in a while, as a special treat, but not too often. They are loaded with Phosphorus, and are very low in calcium. That's not good, since you want a ratio of phorphorus/calcium as close as can be. Such as 1 mg calcium with 1 mg phosphorus. When you do offer a Brazil nut, just make sure you also offer many high calcium foods for the day.

Sorry about the buckeyes. I have no idea what they are. :tilt :rotfl

Good point, TexanSquirrel, but they sure are yummy (um, the candy not the nut:tilt )

And, thanks, Legomom for clearing it all up....this has brought back some nice memories:)
