Absolutely safe. Heating pads are what most rehabbers use under containers of baby squirrels until about a week after their eyes open. You need to make sure you have a heating pad WITHOUT the automatic shutoff feature, however. CVS sells a very inexpensive brand that does not have the auto shut off. Set it on LOW and place the squirrel's container half on, half off the pad.

yeah this is where i went wrong, because mine has the auto shut off and every hour or so i have to go check it and turn it back on.. although my girl just opened her eyes about 3 days ago.. but i still have it on her... i think she likes the warmth.

I use a heating pad and have since they were a week old, I tried to take it out because I didnt think they needed it any more, but we put it back because they were not resting, I have had this one since I was 14 and thats a long time, what we did was wraped the cord very well with rags and then taped it real good and we keep it under their nest box and my husband made a hole for the cord so they cant get to it works real good.
