Hi-
I posted on the infirmiry, but will post here too. Hurricane Ike hit us 9-11 and on 9-21 my husband found a baby flyer out in the yard. her eyes are just now opening (last night) and she is eating well. But she did this wierd thing where she stretched completely out and raised her head , opened her mouth like she was going to howl or something. It freaked me out so I took her to our specialty vet. She has never seen one so young and saw the behavior but doesn't know if that is normal or what. Any ideas?
also she put her on amoxicillian because she did aspirate with one of the syringes I was using.
thanks,

Hi Rainy, I will send a message to one of our flyer experts and ask them to check this thread. Check back frequently today as she usually signs on later in the evenings. Until then try here http://www.nfsa.us/phpBB2/index.php

:Welcome It's wonderful of you to have rescued this poor littlle baby. :thumbsup
Hopefully our flyer experts can put your mind at ease. Did this occur while she was eating? I ask because some baby grey squirrels do something like that while they are eating, gaping their mouth open and looking like they are having a seizure (in greys, it's NOT a seizure, but in the range of "normal"). I don't know if flyer babies might do this also, but possibly so. In any event, someone with flyer experience will come and give you some advice.

Pick up some powered Esbilac and real whip cream. (No pressurized canister cream). We've repeatedly fed 2 parts Esbilac and 1 part whip cream mixed together with barely hot water (it'll cool down with the cooler cream poured in) to our little flyers and squirrels. It sweetens it up and adds a really good fat content to the mix which they really need. Eye droppers work really well.
Before feeding it to him, make sure it's not hot, but warm. You'll have to hold him in an upright position so he doesn't choke on it if too much comes out. Eye droppers are pretty easy for them to suck on and most likely won't need any squeezing on your part. You'll figure that out pretty easy. :)
Once they get a taste of the mix, he'll eat till he's ready to just pass out. Feed him at least every 3 hours to start. We found ours when he was about 4 to 6 weeks old. He ate about 1 eye dropper full and would sleep for about 3 hours. They're nocturnal by nature, so be prepared to entertain him later on when he gets to be about 4 months old. :)
If he's really small, he may need a heating pad set on low. If you have a big enough mitten or beanie, they like to hide in confined warm places as well. You can even keep him in that inside your shirt when you can to help regulate their body heat.
If you can, post some pictures. We'd love to see him and can better gauge care.

Thanks ya all! I have been feeding every 2 hours during the day and 3 through the night starting at 11 pm. ( I think I'm too old for this:)) today is day 7. She did the stretching howling thing at all the feedings yesterday, and while feeding. I think it is normal and maybe just the way she would extract more milk from momma. It just freaked me out initially. she is eating about 1.6ml at each feeding and then promplty balling up and passing out. I have a heating pad under half of her space.
the vet gave her amoxicillian and I have given one dose, but is amoxicillian ok? I thought I read that they could only have one antibiotic and It wasn't that.
I will post a pic as soon as I figure out how to do that. I will check back often today for the support.
thanks again - Rainy's mom
