1. Wildlife Rehabilitators needing Assistance After Ike

Dear Members,

You have all seen the devastation caused by Hurricane Ike. Texas rehabilitators are receiving thousands of squirrels and other injured animals.

Many members are requesting information on how to help. We have spoken with Linda Hufford, a Texas rehabilitator who facilitates the Texas on-line rehabilitator group. She has been in contact with many of those affected. She has given NWRA permission to use an excerpt from her email:

Hurricane Ike hit at a bad time of year for squirrels, who are in the midst of their fall nesting season. Thousands upon thousands of trees are down….and mixed in with the fallen trees are squirrels ranging from newborn to adult. Some squirrels are dying, many arriving in bad shape. As phone lines and computer lines were down (and still remain down in many areas), finders are trying to do their best until contact with a rehabber can be made. Kind-hearted finders who have given the babies anything they could get their hands on, in any way they can, are bringing in squirrels with serious diarrhea, dehydration, and aspiration pneumonia. Those without electricity (which is, as of this morning, still over one million of the 2+ million homes in the area who were without power) are struggling to keep the babies warm enough.

The areas most affected include Brazoria county, Montgomery county, Galveston county, Harris county, Chambers county, and Matagorda counties. For a partial list of rehabbers in the areas, go to: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/wild/rehab/list/

NWRA has been asked how can I be sure my donation is going to someone who really needs it? The website Linda mentions gives addresses and telephone numbers. Many of the facilities listed have websites you can Google that will help you determine who is affiliated or supported by large grantors or organizations and their general support level. You also can Google newspaper articles related to wildlife and Ike to see who has received good coverage and possibly an out-pouring of support. You may call individual rehabilitators to see what is specifically needed. Money is always welcome as it allows the rehabilitator to order what they actually need.

If you wish to deduct donations made to these individuals or organizations, NWRA recommends that you verify the nonprofit status. One online resource for this verification is GuideStar.org which lists many nonprofit organizations and has free registration for donors to access this information. In some states the Office of the Secretary of State also has a website listing nonprofits within that state.

Below is part of another email NWRA received from an organization/coalition that Linda Hufford said is in need of help for themselves and for the rehabilitators in their group. However, these are not the only groups that need help, many smaller centers and at-home rehabilitators really are struggling.

My name is Heather Morris and I am the facility coordinator for Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Coalition (TWRC) in Houston. I'm not sure if you're able to get a message out to membership, but we are in need of assistance with and for baby squirrels as a result of Hurricane Ike. (NWRA Note: TWRC is a coalition of 75 at-home wildlife rehabilitators and is a 501(c)3 organization. <www.twrc-houston.org>;)

At this time, we are in need of any supplies people will send (Esbilac powder formula, catac nipples, syringes, fleece for snuggles, etc.). Monetary donations are appreciated as well. If other rehabbers in Texas would be able to take on some of our babies, that would be good. We have received help from some groups, but babies are continuing to flow in!

Public volunteers in the Houston area for feeding babies would also be welcome. Some of our rehabbers still have no power and a couple have no power or water. We obtained a generator for power at our facility so that during the day we are able to feed at the shelter while waiting for babies to be picked up by the rehabbers.
