Hi all i am new here but have been reading alot of posts but still need help.I have a baby boy grey squirrel 4-5 weeks old i am assuming through research and pictures. I have had him for 4 days now and he is eating and defecating and urinating well. Today when i picked him up for a feeding i noticed that his left eye ( eyes are still closed) was looking swollen,on his next feeding it was more swollen and red where his slits are. Is there something i can do for the little man i have only raised one squirrel before him and have never ran into problems, he is a hurricane ike survivor. Can someone please help tell me what i can do. Should i put a warm compress or cold on his eye or any???

sorry i can't be of much help...i know there have been other babies with eye problems that have cleared up on their own and some that required some drops or ointments. i do know that if you could get a picture of the area in question, those that will have answers will be able to help you better and faster. :)

ok thankyou very much. i will change his blankies i did use a gain detergent, would that only affect the one eye? thankyou for the advice. Should i be really really worried about this as i am or should i give it some time with the saline flushing and warm compress?

oh no no not using a bottle, using a syringe with nipple.no i do not have a gram scale handy, when i first recieved him 4 days ago the girl that had him was only giving him pedilyte and she had him for about 5- 6 days when i recieved him he was still dehydrated so i did the pedilyte that night every 30min for 2 hours then every three hours for 24 hrs and then i started him on formula with pedilyte in formula then made formula normal after a few feedings.he has been doing well intill tonight ,the only thing that had concerned me before was he is quite twitchy lots of nightmares from the storm i imagine! but now we are having issues. so no cream or bananas, got it:)

:Welcome
thanks for rescuing baby:alright.gif
His little eye does look swollen...ouch.
Someone will be here soon to help with that!
Hopefully just an insect bite and it will subside...
Usually sqs open their eyes at about 4 to 5 weeks.
Good luck and welcome to TSB!:Welcome

Hello,
My first squirrel, Pippin, had a similar looking condition on one of his eyes. I wasn't too sure what it meant so left it alone until one day I rub the slit with a cloth and pus came out of one end of his eye. The vet then game me some ointment that I used on his eyes. Unfortunately, the affected eye always had a blind spot (I assume this, it was a milky color, unlike the rest of the dark eye).
I think it is good advice to gently clean the slits with a soft damp cloth. Good luck!

hello all :wave123
The little mans eye is still pretty swollen,i have been doing warm compressions but not as often as i would like ,i had to take a family member to the hospital this morning ,but i am back on track and will continue putting compressions on eye, if any thing does come out of a puss sort can i use terrimiacyn on the eye? I did go and get laundry det. with no chemicals and i also got some sterile saline. I would hate for me to let this progress much longer and him have eyesight issues ,but you know that would be my luck all and i mean all of my animals have issues crazy thing but i am glad i can help them be spoiled and healthy they all deserve it!

Ok so i got my little man out to do his warnm compression and his eye started oozing (white) it is coming out in the middle of his slit and is like in the little spots i tried to get as much out as i could but i do not want to harm his eye but i know the stuff needs to come out. What should i do and what can i put on the eye to help heal,i have terrimyicyn but not sure if i can use it on him. Please help:)

Thankyou very much

You can use Terramycin even if the eye had a bad injury that would not cause harm just do not use anything with a steroid until you can actually see the eye.

Hello again. That sounds exactly like what Pippin had, his eye oozed white (I guess pus) stuff. Using warm compressions I did what you are doing, I also gently pushed along the slip with the compression to get out as much of the stuff as possible. He soon opened his eyes but, as I mentioned, he had a milky spot on the affected eye.

I wish you all the best, having experienced this, I know it is stressful.

Yes it was stressful. So how did pippin do after having the problem on the eye was he able to see well,or get around normally?
