I feel so stupid, but this is something I never thought about before:

I want to offer my little (7-8 wk) babies a natural nibble. Acorns abound in my yard. But: when do I know the acorns are ready to eat? They are falling early 'cause of Fay but are they supposed to be light brown, or dark brownish-greenish? Are they ready when the tops pop off?
I don't want to give them the wrong thing. They are really wanted to nibble now and I'm offering apple, kale, carrot, but thought acorns would make them happy (it's what I live for now:crazy ) Thanks for any advice!!!!!

Good question! And it's always better to ask when you're not sure of something.:thumbsup

I can't tell you for sure when the acorns are ready, but I can tell you that you'll want to make sure they are free of any chemicals or pesticides before you feed them.

I rather suspect their genetic coding will guide them properly to eating acorns when appropriate :D

Cool..........cheerios sounds good, too. Just the plain kind (of course, all I have in my cabinet is Honey Nut):thinking

We got our very first acorn for this season and I was handing it to a juvenile who has been feasting on almonds and filberts for weeks.

She was not sure - sniffed it several times - and then BAM - tore it out of my hand :jump :jump

I was just commenting(complaining?) on how many acorns we have here in NE FL. Literally hundreds; oak trees everywhere. Hmmmm, maybe I should start a mail order acorn biz for squirrel lovers?:D
