I mixed the formula for the squirrel. My kitchen table is crowded with cups and stuff. I went and fed the baby (about 3 or 4 weeks) 3 and a half ccs. But then I saw... I was dipping the syringe in the wrong cup... I just fed it cow's milk!! How bad is this? I am so sorry and worried!

I wouldn't panic. It isn't a steady diet of cows milk. The baby could develope very soft stools for a couple of times but as long as you go right back on its regular diet it souldn't be to bad. Now feeding it cows every meal could have some really bad effects but just one serving, like I said, I wouldn't panic just keep a close eye out and make sure it doesn't develope diareah.

Yes I agree with Timber....there may be a little diarrhea from this one-time feeding or there may be no effect at all. Don't worry. It's when babies are fed on cow's milk for weeks that bad things happen. Be thankful you discovered your mistake right away. :peace

Yes... he digested it well. I'm starting to trust that he is actually pretty sturdy. He was nearly dead when I found him, and took quite a while to perk up. Now he is a little pig, and sqeaks loudly if I don't feed him fast enough.
His poops are so hard... orangey brown and very dry. I took someone's advice and started adding a bit of whipping cream to the formula today.
This squirrel has amazed so many people in my neighborhood...everyone thinks he is just so cute. He's like a little popularity booster, haha!

This is just my thought......why would anyone put whipping cream made "from a cow" into a special formula "made from soy" ???? :dono

If cows milk is harmful to a squirrels then why would "whipping cream" be any different. Does the word "cream" make it less hazardous or more acceptable?

Would you put some cows milk in with the esbilac to make it better??? I think not. Think about it!!!!
I have heard many people say....
" it (whipping cream) contains calcium, a squirrels need calcium".
" it (whipping cream) has a high fat content and that helps fatten up the babies".
There are a host of suppliments for nutriton and calcium that can be add "if need be".
Nutri-cal is a caloric dietary suppliment and Prime for calcium is another...neither of then have "cows milk" in them.
The esbilac or Fox vally contain all the nutrients including calcium and fat required for a healthy squirrel. Why not leave well enough alone?

PRIME - WHO NEEDS IT?

Every seed eating pet bird needs it. It is true that some special pets eating a wide variety of foods get many more nutrients than their less fortunate fellows, but mixed diets featuring table food, vegetables, fruits and so on are hard to BALANCE. How can you know what calcium phosphorous ratio is being offered (much less what is actually ingested)? Or what amino acids are being ingested - all of them or some of them? The Bronx zoo has done a study on captive birds being offered a nutritionist balanced diet, finely chopped and mixed, and found the birds STILL picked out favourite foods and managed to end up deficient.
Birds raising young or laying eggs (especially excessive egg layers) will benefit from PRIME as this is an extremely high calcium content supplement, phosphorous FREE. (Great for iguanas too!). PRIME is the ONLY supplement to use calcium gluconate as its carrier, a naturally sweet substance of highly bioavailable calcium.
Birds that need PRIME should have it sprinkled over greens or fruit each morning. Using it in the water is possible but not recommended, as most consumers object to the odour of sulfur dioxide produced by our (very viable!) beneficial bacteria cultures. PRIME isn't based on sugar so does not dissolve instantly in water, but will always do so within a few minutes. PRIME has so much calcium that some of it will still precipitate out in a saturated solution. For all these reasons we have found consumers prefer to use it in food, not water.
No liquid vitamin has the minerals that PRIME does. And powdered supplements are usually more STABLE. Also, PRIME has beneficial bacteria that are MICROENCAPSULATED, increasing their stability. This makes it excellent for newly arrived and stressed birds. These bacteria help lower the pH in the lumen of the intestine, creating a more negative environment for opportunistic pathogens such as E coli.Louise Bauck BSc, DVM, MVSc.
