I will be getting a baby squirrel tomorrow morning to hand raise from a friends neighbor that found two of them on the ground - one of the babies did not make it. :(
I am a little concerned for the surviving squirrel as a local vet told her to feed it kitten or puppy formula - and while the lady purchased both formulas for the babies she has mainly been feeding the kitten formula because she said they like it better.
My Concerns:
Is drinking the kitten formula going to cause any health problems in the little one I will be getting?
Could kitten formula possible be the cause of death of the baby squirrel that did make it?
P.S.
I instruction my friend to tell the lady what to do for the baby squirrel to ensure it is safe tonight.
Not for sure of age yet - I was just told that it was very young.

until some one else comes on...i'd say stop the kitten formula..and instruct a pedialyte flush..get that crap out of its system....then...by tomorrow some one will give you more step by step dilutions..w the pedialyte...n puppy formula.
nice to see you back...:thumbsup

hey darlin, i am no rehabber but from what i have learned from here is that kitten formula is no good...i would use Esbilac puppy formula since it is the closest to moms milk..it has all the nutrients the baby needs...i wish i could be of more help to ya...:grouphug

Thanks everyone - I am glad to be back and as a Squirrel Mommy never the less. :D
... I am so excited.
But sadly I do not know any thing more about the squirrels other than what I have already told you because the lady was not home when my friend called me... I will ask more questions when the baby arrives tomorrow.
Thanks for being here for ME - Again. :Love_Icon

Well, things didn't go as plan this morning because the lady decided that she wanted to keep the little fella and raise him.... I just found this out about ten minutes ago (and) to make matters worse the lady thinks she can release the baby squirrel when he is three to four weeks old. :shakehead
Please PRAY that my friend can get through to the lady this afternoon when she gets home from work and that the lady will turn the baby squirrel over to me... I now fear for the safety of this little one.

Yeah - I made sure that my friend stresses to this lady that momma squirrels do not even let their babies out of the nest until they are between 12/14 weeks old.... and I asked her to stress to the lady that I personally have all the items and cage needed to raise the squirrel to adult hood - then release.
I wonder who this lady is getting her information from? - I hope it was not the vet.

Good luck! :thumbsup
But, if you are unable to get the baby, perhaps your friend can (strongly!) encourage her to come to TSB for information and guidance? Perhaps even provide her with the direct link to the Nutrition and Caring for Baby Squirrels Thread (http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56) so she can check out the three very helpful articles there.
