I have a 5 year old male who began vomitting this morning. He was fine yesterday - eating - playing - etc. The only thing that has changed is we purchased a new cage which he spent the night in last night. There is no visible signs of injury to him. The vomit appears to be the last thing that he ate. He does drink but then will vomit. I have inspected the cage and he has not chewed on anything. He is now in his play room - an area that he is more comfortable in. Can anyone tell me something that I can give him until I can take him to the vet tomorrow? I am hoping that it is just stress. Thanks

Yes, Possiblily. do you have a health food store near by or someplace where you can purchase Homeopathic remedies?

Sorry that I haven't responded sooner...I have dial up and internet is a nightmare. Since my original post I have tried contact everyone that I know to. There is a veteranarian several hours away that does treat squirrels - no luck in contacting them. I have several other people I know that also have squirrels - no luck, they have never had this problem.

Rocky's diet consists of carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, avocado, tomato, apple, watermelon, walnuts, pecans, hazel nuts, almonds, and variety rodent baked treats. He has a mineral block, deer antler and water available at all times.

He has not vomitted since this afternoon, but he is still not his regular self. He is just lying around and seems to wish to be left alone.

When we got him he was a little over a year and his diet was almost all peanuts. He lost vision in one eye and it took us months to get him to accept the new foods. We leave him in a cage at night when he sleeps and during the day he has a bedroom that he is free to roam. We do try to get him out as much as possible - however when we are not able to he has a shelf in the window in which he can roost and we open the window so he can get fresh air. He also has a pan of dirt for him to play in.

I have printed your list of food - is the most detailed I have seen and I can see that I have left out some things that he might need.

I got Rocky to the vet on Monday morning. He hadn't vomited any over the night but was still not his old self. After a thorough exam the vet found that Rocky had cut his esophagus from something he ate. The vomiting was his way to get what ever it was to dislodge. The vet found no sign of the culprit but could only guess it was a nut shell. He gave me an antibiotic to prevent infection as the wound heals

Rocky did not eat anything Monday or Tuesday. He did however drink water and pedialyte. Yesterday he finally ate a small piece of watermelon, carrot and some apple.

This morning Rocky ate his first solid food. He was able to swallow broccoli and carrot and a small piece of walnut (no shell).

He has not vomited since Sunday, he is back to his old self and I am happy to say that this is almost behind him. He will go back to the vet next week to make sure that the wound is healing.

I would like to thank those that responded to my post. I feel that this is a good forum to get information - and I can say that after seven years there isn't one day that passes that I don't learn something new about my squirrels.:wahoo
