I found a large cage for sale today online. Here is a link to what it looks like new:

Can an adult Grey squirrel fit through 1 inch bars? I love the cage but I think the bars might be too far apart...

I wouldn't pay full price! Someone is selling a 2-month used one for $400 online. :) Still expensive...

I have been thinking about building one but I may buy that one if it would work for him. Does anyone know where to get a cage that large?

Currently he is in a cage that is 60" tall, 30" wide, and 17" deep. I made his current cage by purchasing two of the same cages from petsmart and taking the top off one and the bottom off the other and attaching them together with wire. It works great, but I like to tie up branches from trees etc. and I have broken a few of the bars because the bars are not strong enough to support very heavy wood.

I have always wanted to get him a bigger one and I think it's time to do it! :)

Hi heyjamai (http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/member.php?u=2981)

If you are looking for a cage for your pet to meet it's needs as an adult, a large cage measuring a minimum of 4x5x6 for a gray, and 8x5x4 for a fox squirrel is recommended. Such cages have to be constructed, using 3/8 inch grid cage wire, with pine strips as a frame. Bird cages are not made for squirrels, very expensive, and are too small as well to meet their adult needs. If though, you are only looking for a nest cage, you can find or make one for far less than that, and then use an entire room as a place for the habitat. Many members have then done this, using a smaller cage, still tall, but not as long or deep for the nest cage, and then affording their squirrel a habitat in that room or another. We have lots of examples of this on our board. Check out Jackie in Tampa threads, where she shows the cage she made, or look in our thread on cages.

I have a question about using wood for a frame... Wouldn't a squirrel be able to chew through it? I wouldn't want him to eat his way out!

I used to have a cage made of wire mesh and it became very rusty. What type of cage wire/bars do you use and where can you buy them?

When we built a cage, we made frame panels, and then wrapped 3/8 wire griding around the edges of each of them, and stapling the grid to the wood. The panels were then assembled onsite, with bolts through the frame on the outside, and wingnuts to secure it, making it easy to put together a large cage in a small space. The door to the cage was similarly made, so that the edges were wrapped so the squirrels could not chew threw them.
