I don't have one but DL and FTN found them at Walmart for $5.97 or so!
Good luck and be careful!
I suggest taking him for walks inside for at least a week...so he can get comfortable and not feel straight jacketed before going outside.
The importance here, is his trusting you. He will be scared outside, unfamiliar noises. Please do not rush him into anything that will make him hate being out!
Maybe take his cage outside during quiet time, so he can acclimate to the noises that will be new to him and will be frightening.
Hello Frickster, have fun little feller:Love_Icon

she's already outside....but she's in her pen. i am thinking of eventually letting her walk around the yard or something...but don't want her to disappear yet. are they actual squirrel leashes or something else? she's very trusting of me...but i'm sure she won't like it at first...she's a stubborn little girl!

Wow, she is outside in a lavish new home...good job! And too funny, she is most def a girl!
Sorry I have missed her thread lately, been busy, too busy!
Please give whoever built that release cage a hug!:thumbsup It is awesome!
As far as your other outside sqs not being around as much...maybe babies and stashing food for winter. They get really fat and make several dreys before winter comes, alternative housing! I'm sure they are there ...just busy! Your property looks like a lovely place to be a sq!:thumbsup
And FRICK is so photogenic!:crazy :)

thank you both! my parents built it and i will be sure to pass that on. they're so funny! thought i was crazy bringing two little baby squirrels home...but they are hooked as well. when that storm blew up last week they both went out in the pouring rain trying to gather the acorns as they fell. which reminds me.....is there a way to store acorns so they don't get all gross? thought i'd heard of freezing them, but could have been an old wives tale. :) have either of you ever used nest boxes? if so, did your squirrels keep them? i'm stressing when she is released if she will stay in her box once we move it to a tree outside of the pen. she's started adding leaves and stuff in it, like she would a nest...i was hoping that was a good sign, but i'm not sure....she wasn't very good at building nests when she was off on her sojourn.

You can freeze all nuts....nest box is an excellent idea put it in the cage with them so they can get there scent in it and build a nest in it and then hang it in the tree at release time:D they will find it:thumbsup you will need one for each squirrel.

I only have Frick....sadly, Frack died after being with us two months. That's another reason I'm so stressed over Frick....she has to go on and grow up and live for the both of them. She was an AMAZING big sister!!!

Just a note, putting a leash on a squirrel that you are trying to wild up, can be counterproductive to the purpose of wilding them up, by taming them more. You want her to move away from you when you approach her, not make her an obedient to be on a leash. They can also get caught in the branches and hang themselves, if you are not careful. It is then not a good idea to use on a squirrel that is being prepared to be released.

she has not started her release process yet and i don't want her to be afraid of me. we have a huge yard and i am hoping she will stay in touch like so many of the others on here do.

I just got mine yesterday, I ordered 2 and Simba freaked, but he cannot get this one off, unless he chews it off, which wont happen, But I agree with the testing inside first and getting them used to it, cause they do not like it at first! Dont know if they ever actually like it or just tolerate it eventually. I ordered mine from the Complete Petmart, for 2 with shipping and tax it was 13.98 and took about 1 week to get. It's a ferret Harness, i have tried 2 others before this one, 1 had a little jacket like thing that went around his upper body, nope he got it off in about 2 minutes the 2nd one was just a small regular harness for mini toys, not only was it still too big, but he got that one off even quicker. So this one I think is the best and Donna has had hers a while and I don't think she's had any problems. Rachel has one too for bean.

I understand Frickster, you want her to be a quasi wild pet, but that is not in her best interest. To prepare her for the wild, she needs to become independent of you, refuse to be handled by you. It is not about what you want then, but about what she needs, in order to become wild, so she can do well in the wild.
