a sudden vanishing in their squirrel population!? i know this isn't really something anyone can answer, but just wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts. when we got frick back in april, there were TONS of squirrels ALL over the place in our yard. we live in a neighborhood where there's not a lot of traffic...a couple miles off any major roads. for the last several weeks we have seen a HUGE decline in the amount of squirrels to the point where we haven't seen another in DAYS! we have trees all over our yard and live on 5 acres. they have always been comfortable here and have literally been ALL OVER THE PLACE. we have a couple of deer families that frequent the area, but no other animals on a regular basis. we don't have any pets that would be scaring them off so are just at a HUGE loss for what could be causing this. it's definitely making me nervous to think about releasing frick if something is threatening to the little furballs. just wanted to see if anyone else could provide any suggestions as to what could be at play here. i know there are not many people around VA but the weather hasn't been too bad so i just don't know what could be going on.

Just a thought that maybe they are busy taking care of babies (like all the rehabbers here:) ) and preparing for winter:dono

Wheezer has a good point! also they maybe tracking down different foods. There are alot of trees producing winter foods and sqs go where the food is!
Sounds like you have a nice place for the wilds, and they'll be back!:thumbsup

You know I have very few squirrels right now eating, the ones I can count on are nursing Moms.
Everyone else is out working and storing nuts for winter.
This is also a bad time for them to be getting hit by cars, I had 2 hit this morning. They are just on a ramage and it will be like this for a while.
In season..black wallnuts, hickory nuts, acorns just to name a few.
Look around your area for trees producing nuts and I bet thats where you will find your squirrels.

that's the problem...those trees are ALL OVER the yard and there are NONE! today when i went out to check Frick, she was crying her precious little head off. my mom had been out there earlier and said she'd heard a hawk. same thing happened the other day and she freaked out and went in her box. i'm afraid it might have a nest out there in a tree on the edge of the woods. surely it couldn't have eaten our entire squirrel population without any evidence...could it!? i can't even think of letting frick go with a hawk living out there so close....any suggestions?
