View Full Version : Squirrel Vomit?

For some reason when Christine woke up this morning, she vomited on her bed. She ate fine last night, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Is there anything I should do or give to her to help with this? I've never had a squirrel vomit before that I've raised except when I fed one some bad dried corn a long time ago. He was fine after that.

I have heard of sqs vomiting, but not often...someone will be here to answer, hang in there...
I would probably give ALITTLE water in the mean time. Keep her warm!
Sorry can't offer much.
Is she eating other than formula?
Thanks for helping Loopy!

I just said she ate fine last night. She at 6ccs at about 3am. I did pull a small piece of the bread on one of my Krystals and she kinda nibbled on that.

How old was the formula, did it sit out on the counter warm to long? Is it premix formula or the powdered forumla you mix?

MrBooMY

I use powdered Esbilac. The formula did sit for a while on my desk, but I don't remember how long. I never make more than enough for 2 feedings at a time. It couldn't have been there more than 3.5 hours between feedings. I usually refrigerate it, but I forgot. The weird thing is Chatter got the same formula, and he's fine. I just gave Christine 1.5ccs of tap water and she took it without any issue. So far she's keeping it down.

She just puked again! :( What do I do?!?

I wouldn't give her tap water with out sterilizing it first...to many chemicals.

Formula can spoil very fast if left out....I would throw it out if left out more than a hour not refrigerated. Just because one gets sick and the other doesn't doesn't mean anything.

I would stop feeding her formula for now and start on maybe some homemade solution...let me find it and post it for you and I'll try to get IR in here to help you. She might need 24 hours to flush out her system.

Homemade Pedialyte:

1 tsp salt (teaspoon)
3 Tbsp sugar (tablespoon)
1 quart warm water
Mix all ingredients in warm water. Store in refrigerator.

How to Prepare the Pedialyte
Use a plastic syringe (with or without a nipple). Never use pet nursers or doll bottles. They will choke the baby. Fill a coffee mug with hot water. Fill the syringe with Homemade Pedialyte solution and place it in the mug for a couple of minutes. Squirt a drop on the inside of your wrist to make sure the liquid isn’t too hot. It should feel barely warm on your skin.

Yeah but T, if he uses tap water with the formula, that would be her normal!...and he will use tap water to make pedialyte!? Right?
Or should we be using bottle/distilled water?
I have always used tap water. I take MY tap water with me for Rocky when we travel so he doesn't get constipation.
I also NEVER used formuls left out...?
I am not sure how safe or unsafe that would be and for how long it can be left out.

I PMed IR to get her in to help you out.

Keep her warm....provide her with a heating pad under half her housing quarters, and let her rest. Maybe even quarantine her from the others...maybe somebody else has a different opinion on keeping her separate from the others as I am no rehabber.

With her stomach already upset using the tap water with chlorine is just giving her that much more to deal with...I would think. I would want to keep it pure as possible while her tummy is upset :dono

I always used filter water as you can smell the chlorine in my water. I would never use straight out tap water, but that is my preference. Even on Fallen I give him filter water which we change the filter quite often.

I would boil the water first and let it cool down then make the homemade pedialyte solution

My tap water has no chlorine as it is filtered well water. It's what I've been using the whole time with them. I never took away their heating pad yet, so that isn't a problem. I guess I need to mix some of that homemade pedialyte and keep her on that for 24 hours like suggested.

I would do the homemade pedialtye to flush out the system until one of our rehabbers can get on to help you! Keep us posted on her in the mean time. Poor sweet girl :grouphug

How old is she?

As others have suggested - warm / calm and Pedialyte is the way to go. Filtered water is better than tap water BUT the main issue is to not over worry at the moment and just offer pedialyte & calm TLC.

A lesson on leaving Esbilac out may have just been learned :D

A;; should turn out well - I've see them vomit in the back yard before - catches you off guard for sure :shakehead

Any other REAL signs of anything else wrong?

I just had at least a small victory. I stimulated her and she peed a little and poops were normal. I'm guessing she might have had bad formula like you said or the Krystal bun didn't set well on her stomach. Aww man she just puked AGAIN. I hope this stops soon.

What is a Krystal bun?

If it's from what she ate, vomiting is a good thing ... scary, but good. The immediate key is keeping her quiet and hydrated as vomiting 3 times would cause some dehydration. And keep reporting any changes or occurrences so the rehabbers will get a complete picture and be better able to help you.

You don't have any Krystal places around where you live? You know the small square hamburgers. Whitecastle is very similar.

White Castle I know from my days in Maryland - now that you described it I kind of remember the Krystal.

That said, you have good advice thus far - don't try to force the pedialyte at this time - just offer it.

okay I'm here....
first off, NOTHING from a fast-food joint should be given to a squirrel except maybe vegetables from a Micky D's salad -- but I don't even trust them. :nono They spray their stuff with all kinds of chemicals so they look pretty for days on the shelf :shakehead
Second: I would hydrate this baby with Pedialyte -- flavored if possible because they like it better -- for about 2-3 feedings and then go back to nice, FRESH Esbilac. Esbilac spoils faster than anything I've ever seen....can't take chances with it.

I wasn't thinking when I did the Krystal bun. They really didn't seem to eat any of it, just kinda shred it. I just offered her some pedialyte solution that I made up according to the recipe. She took 4.5ccs of it before she stopped. Then she PEED all over my leg right after. So far no more pukingl :multi

I checked the left over formula that was used to feed her, and I feel like an ass feeding that to the babies. It was obvious just from looking at it that it had started to turn. I guess I'm just lucky Chatter has a stainless steel lined stomach. He hasn't even acted weird. She seems to be doing much better. I'm going to keep her on the pedialyte solution until at least tonight before I try to go back to Esbilac. When I do, I'll probably make her some 3 to 1 to start out to make it easy on her stomach.

So glad to see Christine is doing better:thumbsup

I wanted to tell you about a baby squirrel I raised named Christine.
It was a baby with a bad leg and I thought maybe it will be non-releaseable and I could keep her ( I so missed my Wheezer who had died a year before). I had just seen the movie "Phantom of the Opera" and the phantom so loved the woman, "Christine". I too loved this little squirrel that much so that is why I named her Christine:) (I called her Chrissy later)
As it turned out her leg healed and I had to release her, it broke my heart but it healed when I saw how happy she was in the woods..even two years later:)

Good luck with your Christine:grouphug

Giving some pedialyte to your other baby might not hurt to get it out of their system as well.
On another note if they are still on formula and not switched over to solids completely, I am not sure why you would give them anything out of the ordiinary. If they are starting to wean give them rodent blocks and pieces of apples to munch on. Not man made human foods :nono
When she starts keeping the pedialyte and keeping it down her next feeding can be %50/50 then full strength.

MrBooMY
09-03-2008, 03:40 PM
I already gave Christine some 50% strength Esbilac and so far it's staying down just fine. No one else needs to chew me out, I am upset enough about it without any help. She looked so pitiful after throwing up about 4 times. I kept giving her water just to help her get it out. After it was all out, she got 2 4.5cc doses of Pedialyte Mix. That stayed down, and she pooped and peed fine, so I decided to go ahead with the weak Esbilac. I think we are finally past this. I'm going to make DAMN sure that I never make that mistake again.

Thanks for updating us and glad to know she is holding it down w/ normal bathroom deeds :jump

Just know if she starts to vomit again, I would go back to the homemade pedialyte according to Island Rehabber.

I just fed her 6ccs of regular 2 to 1 Esbilac and she's sound asleep and acting normal. No obvious distress, and she doesn't have that blah look to her anymore. Once I'm sure she's good on 2 to 1, I'm going back to 1.5 to 1 that I've been using since they got older. Keeps me from having to buy cream and possibly upsetting their tummys.

I have been staying out so as to not get in the way of the experts with their help. Sounds like all is getting back to normal, you have done a great job :thumbsup

Hope Christine is awake and bouncing around this morning :crazy Maybe when you get a chance and things are back to normal some new pictures of those two would be great :poke :tilt
