View Full Version : I caught a squirrel

Hi all,
I have been a member here for awhile, but this is my first post.
I have an semi-urgent matter to tell you about.Last night,I noticed
a small squirrel clinging to our screen room in our back yard.He is not
so much a baby, but more of a juvenile. He may have fallen out of the palm tree near where I saw him,but I'm not sure.I waited to see if the mother would show up,but when I was getting ready to come in for the night ,I noticed he was still there. So I captured him with a net,and he is now in our old cat carrier.I would have just left him go in our yard, but there are a few Feral cats hanging around, and I figured they would have got him.
So now I am not sure what to do.Either I can let him go again, hoping his mother will find him,or I can give him to someone that rehabs squirrels.
I figure that if I let him go,he will be very wary of me,and I probably won't be able to catch him again.I know Sparky from this site, and I emailed him last night, but I have'nt heard back from him yet,so I decided to post here.
Any help/comments would be appreciated.
Thanks

That okay, I'll try to post a list of rehabbers to this site. Let me see if it will work.

I think it wil be easier for you to go to the bottom of the page and click on Forum Jump, scroll down to just below Squirrel Nutrition to Rehabber Locations. Click on Rehabbers and go to the first post and click on it, it has a list or rehabbers listed by state. I think it's A-M. Then go to F (Florida) and look at them and see who is closest to you. If you need my help with that I will be here.

OK,I got breaking news everybody. This just in.As I was sending messages to you all,I heard a commotion on my back porch,so I went out and looked, and there sat Mom,looking in at her baby. She was going crazy,so I opened the carrier, and ran and got my camera, and she walked right into that carrier ,and came out with that baby in her mouth! The last I saw em,they were heading up into the trees.I caught it on video, and I'm gonna try and get it on youtube
for everybody that wants to see it.It was a great, happy ending. Thanks to all for the help and support you gave to me!I'm just glad it all worked out OK.

Thanks for all your kind words! If any of you all are ever in the Tampa Bay
area, send me an email, and I'll show you my setup.I have three feeding
stations, four water bowls, and 7 or 8 nesting boxes on my property.
I feed a couple dozen neighborhood Squirrels daily, and have probably
almost a dozen permanent residents in my yard.Well, enough for now,
I don't want to divert any more attention from any more pressing matters.
Take care everybody!

Hi everyone,
Well,I posted the video on Google Video,if you would like to view it, do a search for this:
Squirrel Momma rescues her baby from prison
I apologize for the quality of the video,I had my camera set on the lowest
quality, and forgot to change it in the excitement.
I have a few more posted if anybodys interested;here's what they are named:
Kung Fu Squirrels
Bag Squirrel
The Kung Fu Squirrels video is pretty long, and once again,I apologize for the video quality.
I hope everyone enjoys.

Hi again,
I took a picture of the screen where the Momma Squirrel initially
came through.Notice the surgical precision of the circular cut, just
big enough for her to get through.Amazing! These animals are so intelligent!
Bye,

Hi again everyone,
I have a few more pics to post concerning the "Prison break".
To answer whether or not I have seen them again,I'm really not sure. There is
a mother with three babies in one nesting box in my yard, and I think there is another active nest in the palm tree near where I found the baby.I'm thinking he fell from the palm tree, because I saw bits and pieces of nest on the ground there too.The palm tree is almost thirty feet high,so I can't see them to confirm whether or not it was indeed them.Anyhoo, here's some pics.
PIC 1:the prisoner
PIC 2:mama casing the place from the tree-look carefully, she's hiding
PIC 3:closeup of mom in the tree watching-sorry it's blurry
PIC 4:momma getting ready to spring the youngster
PIC 5:momma making the snatch
If you look closely in the last two pics, you can see the hole momma made in the screen door when she initially broke in.
Enjoy!:)
P.S
I am going to try and post more on this site, and share some of the MANY
photos I take.I spend most of my time when not at work in my backyard,
in my hammock,"hangin out" with my furry friends. That's why I don't get online much to post.(my next PC is gonna be a laptop,so I can be mobile!)
