View Full Version : DESPERATE: 56 BABIES AND COUNTING

I am posting in the emergency section because I consider this to be a true emergency. I am up to 56 baby squirrels as of this afternoon. Most of the other rehabbers in my area are full and refusing to take anymore including in the counties north and east of me. I took in 13 yesterday and five this morning. Normally I am too proud and stupid to ask for help but I am being swollowed into baby squirrel land. I am in desperate need of supplies. If anyone would like to donate supplies I am in desperate need of powdered Esbilac, catac nipples, half cc o-ring syringes, fleece blankets, heating pads, rodent blocks, monkey biscuits, and nutrical. Anything related to squirrel babies would be greatly appreciated. Monetary donations are also needed to help pay for the medications needed. We currently have five babies on antibiotics, one that has pneumonia and needs antibiotics and nebulizing meds., and two possible pox babies. Please help us to help them. Anyone interested can either pm me or Gammas Baby for my info. Thank you for listening!

Good grief you need human help as well, is there anyone that can help assist you with the care and feeding of all these precious babies? maybe someone studying for their rehabber license or a vet tech that could come help out? any colleges around with kids studying to be a vet? just some ideas.

Yes without question Squerly and I will help out $$$$. I will send you a PM to get the info I need.

:thankyou :bowdown :grouphug

I could take 3-5 off your hands, if we can match sizes up. I'm in Jacksonville. I thought initally I was swamped with 11, but I've gotten my routine down and doing well. I would also send $$ if you prefer that.

Are you anywhere near North Florida? I live in Palatka, and am currently rehabbing 2 babies, but I can take more. Let me know!!!!

My god, Loopy! I hope when you said "we" it meant you have at least SOME help; otherwise 53 nursing squirrels is humanly impossible. I currently have 19, 10 still nursing, but when I had 19 infants, I thought I would go mad. Just when I finished feeding and stimulating the last, it was time to mix formula for the next feeding (Plus I have this "real" job I'm supposed to do). Anyway, I wish I could take some off your hands, but because of getting the edge of Gustav I expect more tomorrow (picked up four flyers about the size of the first digit of my pinkie finger today), and I simply can't, but if you'll pm me an address I'll send something (check) to help a little.

Okay, guilt is setting in and my heart is overpowering my reason: depending on where you are, I might be able to take a couple--PBluejay (a.k.a.Dumbass Jack).

We're up in Virginia and may not be able to assist physically with taking some off your hands. We can send you some funds by middle of next week if that will help?

Where exactly in Florida are you located? I'll help as much as I can if you are close by. I'm in Jacksonville, FL myself. I've just got my 3 babies up to the 5-6 week stage and they are getting quite playful. I've got a huge bag full of the 1ml small size syringes if you need some.

Thank you everyone for the offers of help. I am sorry that I can't get to everyone but my time is so very short lately. I promise I will get to everyone as soon as I can. If you do need info and I don't get back soon, Gammas Baby has my info too. For all the people who offered to take some of the babies, I appreciate your offers of assistance but the squirrels are still in quarantine right now and some have issues. I am calling in the reserves to help feed. I may not have help everyday but when someone can come and feed just a few it really helps. Gotta go, babies to feed. I'll try to get back on later.

I just sent a box with about 10 1cc syringes to someone, I don't know if it pertained to this thread or not, but I hope so. I don't know why, but a good rehabber friend of mine sent me a whole 1 quart ziplock FULL of them. They have really come in handy with the babies I've raised.

Thanks everyone for the support. It really can be crazy sometimes. We are starting to get into a schedule and it is getting easier. The problem is when new ones come in and I have some in the rehydrating process, some on half formula, etc. and to Pam, it's been so crazy I haven't even been able to get a shower in. What was that about time to myself. I have learned to do laundry, clean, and type w/ a baby & syringe in hand (and mouth). When I am on the phone half the time people can't understand me because I have a damn syringe in my mouth. God forbid if I put it down Joe or Casey will take it in a second. I freaked yesterday because my prize nipple came up missing. Everyone complained this morning when they had to take the new one.

Loopy Squirrel
09-03-2008, 06:13 PM
Hand cream???What do you mean...I still haven't even had a chance to get in the dang shower. I smell like squirrel pee and puppy milk. It's a new scent. I did want to report that everyone is doing very well, I did however loose two. Both were possible internal damage. One of the babies came in yesterday and it had a pelvic fracture and I was totally disappointed that I lost him. It was such a sad story. A woman, who in the past, has called me many times regarding baby squirrels and this one was in her neighbors yard caught by a cat. I heard a baby crying back at her house so I ran back after I had got the injured one and the baby was up in the tree screeming bloody murder and there was a mom squirrel in the middle of the tree. She kept running up the tree and the baby would scream at her and kick her away. After a few minutes she came down the tree w/ the baby and move it to another tree. Then she ran up a third tree and I heard another baby cry and then settle down then she came out and did a cur-splat on the palm branch. The lady said she had seen a hawk earlier so I think that it may have came and startled them all and maybe the babies paniced and the one fell out and there was the cat. While I had the baby he began to cry and that mom flew down the tree and just about ran to us. It was like she was begging me for her baby. I felt so terrible taking it but I knew he had a bad injury. I took him to the hospital and got an x-ray and the pelvis was fractured but no signs of internal bleeding or any head trauma. We gave him pain meds and I took him home. He did great all afternoon and into the evening. When I went to feed this morning he was gone. I really had high hopes for this baby because the fracture wasn't that bad. The other baby basically was lethargic upon arrival but w/ no injuries and wasn't even really dehydrated. He never really got over the lethargy even after rehydration. No other obvious signs. No brusing, bleeding, head trauma, bloat, diarrhea, nothing. He just seemed to fade away. It was very sad especially not having a reason for either of their deaths. This is when I hate rehab. It's one thing to have healthy babies come to you, but it is another to have the sick & broken too and sometimes there is nothing you can do to fix them.

:grouphug :grouphug So sorry for your losses, Loopy. RIP dear babies. :Love_Icon :Love_Icon

I know in the blur of all you are doing, Loopy, it must be hard to keep in mind that you are a blessing to ALL of them, even, perhaps especially, the ones that you lose. They still had a chance because of you and were well cared for and safe and warm -- because you are there and care so much. Let us keep reminding you of that, because I'm sure you are far too busy to think of it yourself. You are a gift to each one of these babies. :grouphug :bowdown

Details details. :rotfl The shower will still be there but your hands may not. Trust me I did 40 a couple years ago and my hands were like raw meat from scratches. You need to protect your hands. It got so bad I was looking for gloves. I looked at climbing gloves, baseball gloves and golf gloves anything that would protect the back of my hands and leave my fingers free. Never found what I wanted. Used a ton of lotion, but am still looking for the right gloves.

Hey, try playtex house cleaning gloves and cut off the fingers. The babies don't like the rubber feel, but you can keep a grip on the pretty easy.

Those pics look like a squirrel mosh pit!
I used fingerless gloves (cotton weave that didn't catch his nails)when Scrib went through his scratching stage. They used to be fingered gloves but were destined for a higher purpose! Also come with funky non slip bits on them that Scribble found interesting and help me keep a grip on him! Sadly, my dog liked them more...
Good Luck Mother of 56! You will do great and those babies will love you for everything that you do.

I wanted to give a quick update to everyone who has been watching...everyone is hanging in there and quite a few have opened their eyes. Feedings are going better as everyone is getting used to how it goes and now that many have opened their eyes they are slowly doing the potty thing. There are a few that I still have to work with but many are already doing it and I even noticed two w/ their eyes closed that will leave the nest and potty in the corner. I still have four w/ abcesses that have to be drained at least three times a day...yes they fill up that fast and the one w/ pneumonia is doing better. I had a second come in w/ pneumonia and she is doing pretty good. The pox scares turned out to be just scares. Thank God, I didn't need that. I have one coming in tomorrow from another rehabber w/ a broken back leg. Hopefully he'll be o.k. X-rays tomorrow.Thank you again to everyone that has helped me out in my time of need. You have lifted a huge burden off my shoulders trying to figure out how I was going to manage. I usually don't get this many in all at once especially so many small ones. Most of the time they are scattered throughout the year so it is easier to manage but I guess this time mother nature decided to throw me a curve ball instead and we haven't even had a hurricane yet. Hopefully Ike will not hit us and in another few days all the babies eyes should be open so it will go much faster for me and I'll be able to take in more if needed. What I really need now is to grow two extra arms.:D

Seeing C*ndy feeding babies by kerosene lamp brought back memmories of a few years ago when FL had the four hurricanes hit. I had thirty babies and I had to heat their milk using the sterno. We had power on and off for hours. Everytime the power would suddenly come on I'd reheat the microwaveable heating pads and try to run the washer/dryer so I'd have clean blankets. There were times I'd have to wrap up all the babies and lay them on my belly for heat. What a hoot. Florida is an interesting place to rehab. The sad part was the sickening feeling I kept getting from watching the blowing trees and worrying about all the misplaced squirrels.

Loopy;

I hope that all is going well with your babies. We've been dealing with a bit of a crisis of our own up here now for last 4-5 days. Nothing on the scale of what your working with.

We applaud your efforts and that of many other rehabbers and rescuers that can perform this work. We hope to get licensed as a state rehabber here in Virginia but don't have the time to go through training with work and the pets we currently care for. We know it takes a lot of time, effort, patience, and funding.

God bless, and let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

O.K. now it starting to get ridiculous. I took in 11 the other night and eight last night. None today so far but I guess I shouldn't say anything. I did a head count and I have 74 babies including the fox squirrels. I moved out 11 into the wilding out cages yesterday so that took a little pressure off. Two of the babies that came in yesterday were 1 wk old pinkies. They look really good though and are taking the formula well today. I also wanted to let everyone know that I am still trying to catch up on all the packages & donations. I have been really slacking though. Along w/ all the babies I have also been dealing w/ my mother-in-law who lives w/ us. She has COPD and has recently taked a turn for the worse and we have been trying to arrange Hospice care the last few days. I have had nurses/social workers/ and animal drop offs all at the same time so please bear w/ me. I will get back to everyone very soon. Do you realize how difficult it is to explain why you have a "tarded" squirrel running through the house?:D

Yeah, I can try to take picks of them in their containers. The older ones can be difficult because they scatter but I'll try. I have shifted everyone around and moved open eyed babies into a container, incoming into another and eyes closed and recently opened babies in another. I have one group of 15 in a small cage because they are starting to get active and play w/ toys. It is going faster though since over half have opened their eyes.

Sorry I haven't been on in a while. I have bad news to report. I had a possible virus run through and I have lost ten babies to it. It is very similar to what happened last season. Some respond to antibiotics and some do not. I am not sure if I have two different things going on or if the antibiotics are working on secondary bacterial infections. They have diarrhea, incontinence, and for some it turns to respiratory. I had one die in less than 12 hrs and she had no diarrhea and her respiratory symptoms did not respond to anything, even nebulizing and lasix. They all have been treated for parasites too. Some of the symptoms are very similar to bordetella. I moved some of the older babies outside and thank God I am only nursing 35 right now.

I haven't gotten around to take pics yet. I need to take some new ones of the fox squirrels. They have gotten huge. I lost two more babies this weekend. This virus, or whatever it is, is still hanging around. I have three more that are showing signs so I hit them hard this morning w/ antibiotics and hoping for the best. Now it seems to be showing itself w/ out any warning. The squirrels will be o.k. the night before and then in the morning they are lethargic, weak, and breathing very heavy. It is only happening to one group. All the others are o.k. and doing well, including some new ones that came in and are in quarantine.

I have been dosing antibiotics, lasix, albuteral to no avail. This is when rehab really SUCKS. I lost two more this afternoon. On a positive note I do have one who started showing symptoms last night and he is still hanging in there and hasn't gotten any worse. Lets hope and pray that he'll be the one that pulls through and no more come down w/ this. I won't have any hair left if it doesn't stop.

Well, because everything is logged in my books and F&G watches everything, I can't pass them on to anyone other than another licensed rehabber and I am not supposed to cross county lines. Besides, at this point I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that since I don't know what I am dealing w/ and I don't want to possibly infect a healthy population of squirrels.

Right now I am only nursing 17. I have ten outside and I have released 11. I had some friends take some for me which took a lot of pressure off me. I ended up loosing a total of fourteen babies to this virus/bacteria. I have some diarrhea starting again in the group of squirrels that were sick so I am watching very carefully. All of the new ones that came in are o.k. and the older groups are fine. It just seems to be just this one group. The fox squirrels are getting so big. They are weaned now but are all over the house and creating havoc. They don't realize how big they really are and when they land on something everything goes CRASH to the floor thenthey look at each other like "who did that?". I love them though, they are so sweet and gentle. Thank you for your condolences regarding my motherinlaw. It's been a long struggle and in a way I am almost relieved. I know that sounds horrible, but if anyone has been through something like this you will understand what I mean. Being a caregiver to animals is one thing but a human is another. I don't do well w/ humans. Thank you though for caring. It means a lot to me that you all are in this with me, the squirrels, the squirrels illness, & my motherinlaw. THANK YOU!!!

I know what you mean about it almost being a relief. My Mother-in-law wasn't in a hospice, but she was in the hospital for 7 long weeks on a respirator and had two surgeries at 84 years old. It's just so hard to see them suffer and know there's no hope for them to get better. She's not in pain any longer and that's what you have to remember.

Hi, and Welcome. I know that you are new here, and perhaps don't understand everything. Loopy, and a great many more here, is a rehabber. In other words, we rescue, rehab, and release. All of these babies are nursed back to health, taught how to survive in the wild, and then released back into the trees to live the life of a wild squirrel. None are ever sold. Occasionally there will be one that is NonReleasable for one reason or another, and there are places that will care for them for the rest of their lives, and give them a life that is as close to wild as it can be.

I also do rehab work (not nearly on the grand scale Loopy does!) and have added many many squirrels to the population here in Texas. Before I ever got into rehabbing, I raised flying squirrels, and still do. I also do Flying Squirrel rescue from people that have got a flyer that is not suited for life with humans. These are also rehabbed and given the choice of being a wild flyer. I think that flyers are wonderful creatures, and love them with a passion. Most of mine are in large outdoor cages with lots of trees and branches to play on. In other words, they are all spoiled rotten!

Hope to see a lot of you on TSB, and hear all about the flyer that owns you. And don't forget the photos!!!!

Sorry I haven't been up dating on all the babies. It has gotten a little calmer here. I have released most of the babies but I still have a few little ones still in the outside cage. I just wanted to say thank you again to all those that helped and all those who sent wishes & prayers, especially when things went wrong. I know there were a lot of people who sent money via paypal and some who sent in money to Chris's squirrel store and I'd like to thank all that helped and didn't get a personal thank you. I tried to send out thank you note or pm's but there were a few of you that sent names on cards from Chris and I didn't recognize some you w/out your TSB name; so I'd like to thank all of you now. I appologize for taking so long but w/ all that happened including the death of my motherinlaw (right in the middle), it was crazy. I would not have made it through w/ out all of your help. Money was very tight w/out any donations coming in and w/ all the expenses piling up I would not have made it. THANK YOU all again.
