About a week ago my backyard neighbor told me he saw a lil juvenile take a full fall from one of the big redwoods in our yards. It hit the ground and his big German Shepherd pinned it to the ground and was starting to bite him when the lil fuzzer took a chunk out of his nose. The Shepherd ran back to Dave for help (with a very bloody nose) and the fuzzer struggled up the tree.

About 5 days ago I started seeing him at the base of our pear tree - I now think he is one of a litter of 4 that live just outside our patio doors.

He appears to have a severely broken front leg - he can climb and move fast but there is a serious injury there.

Today I purchased a small squirrel HAVAHART trap and will also set up a cardboard box trap with a string and wooden stake to hold it up. All 4 of these lil cuties frequent the same area at the same time.

There is a new supply of black oil sunflower seeds and filberts ready to go in the morning and I have a vet set up (I think) for treatment.

Prayers and suggestions on trapping - I've caught plenty of cats but this is a squirrel mjs mjs

It is sooooooo frustrating to see them needing help but sooooooo squirrely about relaxing and getting the help they need.

I know - it is programmed in them for survival in the wild - I just so pray I can catch him.

Hoping for the best:grouphug :grouphug

In the meantime I wonder if you could put out calcium rich foods that might help the fuzzer mend his/her bones:dono

I am always amazed at how wild critters mend and deal with disabilities.
I have seen several deer survive on 3 legs as well as some squirrels.
If this little ones survives the injury I bet he/she will adapt quite well:)

(Well we can hope and pray for that:tilt)

I'm with Wheezer it just amazes me what these critters can over come and adapt to. Let us know how he progesses and if you have any luck catching him. Put out what you can and just hope he comes to it and gets the food and maybe even some vitamins that he will need at this time to help him heal, good luck AC :grouphug

Here is some real confusion:

Our injured fuzzer continues to clearly favor the front arm.

That said - she can climb like a rocket, will jump from the boulder to the tree over a 4' gap - check things out - and come back down and look around.

Earlier today she was spinning around and frolicking. But the arm is still being favored when walking around - it is being held at an odd angle - but her activity does not appear too compromised.

Serious looking but :dono :dono :dono

I have had a few lil guys over the years sprain our have a problem with a leg and favor it for awhile only to one day start using it with no problem, in fact one I had inside for awhile "Willy" at one time injured a nail during climbing and he favored the foot/leg for a week and would not put weight on it, I hope and send wishes that your little guy is just favoring a minor injury like mine was at one time.

all my prayers for the lil guy..!:)

Now I am so worried that I have broken trust with our Free in the Trees fuzzers - only a couple have showed up since this morning's trapping. My wife alerted me that she just saw the fuzzer go in and the trap door close behind it.

He was freed within 1 minute of the door closing - made his feelings known with some chatter.

Could I have caused a break of trust in such a short time???

Dont' worry about that AC, once habituated to feeding, it won't change. I had to trap a large male squirrel once, but didn't know how to set the trap right. so when he went in, the door snapped too soon and hit him, and he escaped. About one hour later he came back and this time went in again, but I had the door set right, so I got him. So don't worry about that, just do not be surprised if they don't learn right away to keep out of the trap.

The squirrel doesn't know who put out the trap only who set it free, their hero....:thumbsup
