so up until this point, my little angel has not been a very talkative one. she really only fusses when she has a nut and thinks someone is trying to take it or when she is accidentally squeezed or something. however, today she was in her outdoor pen and when my mom went to check on her - she said she was just fussing up a storm (the squirrel chatter that kind of sounds like donald duck). when i got out there she was making this repetitive sqawk - sigh - squeak noise over and over. i can't reall describe it but kind of reminded me of air being let out of a balloon at some points. i went in the cage with her and kind of rubbed her and after a couple minutes she stopped and just went to running all over her cage. it was hot so she kept climbing to the top and just laying down. normally she comes right to her transport cage to bring her back in...but today we had to put her back in it. now....since this was so out of character for her - i of course got worried. there were some loud bug noises outside today - maybe those cicadas or whatever. does this sound like she was just scared and reacting or should i be more worried? THANKS ALL!

Could there have been any other animal around that she could see that you didn't notice? Sounds like she was a little scared of something. Are there any other squirrels around?

Once they were outside, my squirrels would freak out when a hawk or a crow was nearby. They would stay freaked out for a while, even after the bird was gone. Lots of chattering or 'barking', and tail-swishing. I think it's a natural instinct, since hawks are one of their predators. Maybe there was a big bad bird hanging around......

yeah...i forgot to add the violent tail swishing lol. i didn't think she could flap it any faster - but clearly i was wrong. there absolutely could have been something out there. she kept staring into the woods and watching. and she seemed to calm when we were in the cage with her. she's not being released yet...she just plays outside for a while. the noises she were making were just so unlike her. frack used to make almost the same noise but not nearly as loud when he was scared. as soon as we fixed whatever it was scaring him - he'd stop. what exactly does it mean to overwinter by the way?

Be oh so very careful if you are letting him out and a hawk is on the fringe of the woods. Those damn things can swoop in so so so fast and grab your fuzzer.

she's in her pen....not out where something can grab her. she came in and took a nap and then when we played in the house again she was fine. she usually would have gone out again later in the afternoon, but since she seemed upset - wanted to let her wait until tomorrow. funny little girl she is.

it was just so strange because she's always been so quiet....i am glad to know she can "talk" when she needs to though. guess it makes it all the more important lol. if it's important enough for her to speak - we better listen by golly! :)

Hi~:)
I've notice, from observing the squirrels when they were in my yard. They do this "squawking" as an alarm sound. Whenever there's anything around (usually a cat or a hawk) that they think may be a danger to them...then sound this alarm. When the squirrels are on their own, in the wild...this is their way of alerting one another to danger.
She thinks something is possibly going to hurt her.
