Hi all!

:Love_Icon Pleased to say that Cupcake is growing like a little weed! Her eyes aren't open yet but shes gaining weight and her coat looks amazing!:Love_Icon

I am running into a problem come feeding time, somehow while feeding her she has found a way to block the syringe tip with her tongue, when she moves or releases her tongue the suction causes a large amount of formula to rush into her mouth! So far I've been lucky enough to have the syringe angled either up or to the side, so she hasn't had any issues with aspiration. It's scary though!

Has anyone had this issue, or perhaps has some advice? Ive slowed down her feedings (much to Cupcakes dismay) but can only do so much. That little rascal!

Also - she is completely silent still, no chirps or grunts. Should I be worried?
More pictures to come as soon as she opens her eyes!

Thanks!!!

Frick doesn't make much noise either...unless SHE'S (that's still so weird) mad or thinking we're gonna take something she's eating - and then only if it's a nut. The only other time she squeaks is if she's hurt or stunned.

Fallen never made a peep eithere....I always set my phone to wake me as he would never squawk when hungry just rouch around looking :shakehead
He's still not vocal...but he was during his casting of his arm....whine and cried and squawked in anger when on his agenda to not go in his cage

Thanks for all the input!!

I put a nipple on the end of her syringe and she seems to be doing better, I'm worried because she can create enough suction to move the stopper down herself - is this safe? I find myself constantly checking her breathing for any kind of sound...maybe I'm just a worry wart! The addition to the syringe has made feeding much less messy and definitely more peaceful!:Love_Icon

I guess i have read so many horror stories about bottles I'm paranoid.:dono

Good news though! I found out that my vet will not only prescribe antibiotics but examine and treat squirrels, guess it helps to be a loyal customer!! :wahoo

Her eyes have been squinting and "blinking" getting ready to open - im so excited!

Thanks Gamma! You are always on top of things! Glad there are other late nighters out there :crazy

I had a hunch something was wrong - i felt a little to "out of control". I'll try to hold on to the stopper and see how that goes! This method seems much more soothing so ill try and keep up with it - if it gets to nerve wracking its back to just the syringe!

Shes sleeping in my lap right now - so cute! Dreaming of scampering up and down trees no doubt!

I have a nipple-stopper, too! Duane Almond....of my three pinkies (The Almond Bros & Sweet Melissa :)) Duane is The Pain....he alternates between stopping up the nipple with his toungue and/or snorting formula thru his nose. :sanp3 I cannot tell you how slowly and carefully I feed this baby....takes me twice as long as the other two put together, but most of the time Duane will cause some kind of 'incident' at mealtime :shakehead. Oh, yeah he's a head-wagger too......the head goes back and forth like Stevie Wonder at the piano....I am thankful every day that he never actually aspirates. He scares me to death and I have fed many pinkies in the past few years. His siblings Gregg and Sweet Melissa are no problem -- But Duane......:frustratedx :Love_Icon :D

LOL. Glad I'm not alone!!

She was doing just great until she learned this "trick" and yes...feedings were taking upwards of about 30 min! Not fun in the middle of the night - plus I was constantly listening to her chest...i even borrowed a stethoscope from a friend!

Since the addition of the nipple - she has been doing super! Feedings are now down to about 10-20 min and she is as happy as a little clam. I also think shes getting less air mixed in there. Silly babies, if only they knew how much we worry!

Stevie Wonder - how that made me giggle! Sitting in class right now - I'm sure they think I'm bonkers! In a psychology class at that! LOL:wahoo

Tell Duane if he doesn't shape up he might get a whole thread commenting on his trouble making! You can use Cupcake as an example if it helps get the point across!:D

Gosh..it is exciting when they finally wake up....I only used the syringe because I was nervous that the little nipple would get lodged down into their throats if they sucked it in. The bottles didn't seem to secure the plastic nipples well. This is a little movie when my fab 5er's woke up that first week. It was adorable. they went from being 5 little blind squirrels to being WILD! I loved it....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LizgJkJvotg

Great video! That looks like pretty sophisticated editing software. What are you using?

Sorry, I can't add anything but admiration to the subject of properly feeding an infant squirrel.:bowdown :thumbsup

Actually, that video wasn't very good quality .......at least I didn't like it...but I was using cyberlink power director. what I have learned to do is when I do a movie, I then will take the avi file and change it to a flv file which is used by youtube. And that seems to upload to give a better quality movie on you tube.
