because squirrels, with the exception of bred flyers, are wild, and there are LOTS of domestic bunnies needing good homes.. and we're talking GOOD homes, lots of room, time, attention, thought and education (but it's worth it because bunnies are WONDERFUL pets) If you're not choosy, I'd say start here!

Then the right rabbit may be just the critter! You'll want to go to a shelter, not a pet store. Even though babies are super cute, when you adopt an adult you can really pick the right bun for you.
But be warned - they are just as expensive and just as much work as a cat or dog. They will not be happy if you lock them in a cage all the time. They are interactive and fun little critters that will want to check everything out. They have vastly different personalities as well as likes and dislikes.
They'll need a large cage, spay/neuter, quality hay and fresh fruits and veggies. You'll need to find a rabbit savvy vet to have on hand should anything come up. They can be litterbox trained so you'll also need a safe bedding. The 'rabbit hutches' you see at pet stores are usually no good. They are typically too small and the wire bottom can hurt a bunny's feet.

njffellow - I'm a rehabber in NJ and it is illegal to have squirrels unless you have a special permit/license. As everyone has already mentioned they can not be made into pets at all. I have a domestic rabbit that is an amazing pet. He is completely litter box trained and loves to snuggle on the couch. When I let him out of his cage he follows me around. You can always find one at your local rescue shelter.

Do you have space for a rabbit, a room that can be bunny-proofed, and the $$$ to buy a nice cage and good food and bedding and any vet visits that might come up? It's not a fun thing to think about when looking for a new buddy, but it's a fact of life. :thumbsup
