Please advise.
We have a squirrel that has been injured possibly, by a cat. This squirrel lives outside.
The squirrel has swelling spots on both sides. Maybe an infection?
Any suggestions to help would be appreciated.
Thank you
Sissy

Hi thanks for helping this squirrel.
Can you give us a little more information. How old do you think it is? Do you know how long it has been injured and do you have access to a vet or antibiotics? If it is a cat inflicted injury it will need antibiotics quickly. We need your eyes to be our eyes so any and all info about the squirrel will help us help you better. Is the squirrel moving around, panting, listless, etc.? Has it drank or eaten anything. Sorry for all the questions. Is there anyway you can post pictures of the wounds?

:Welcome noel -- as Sissy said, the more you can tell us about the squirrel the better help we can be to you. Luckily you are in a state where there are more vets willing to treat wildlife, including squirrels. It may be necessary to trap this little guy to get him the help he needs. Please tell us what part of Florida you're in, too.

Hello : Sorry unable to send picture's,,, Iam going to say about a week maybe at best , He showed up at the feeder, He was awful to look at , fur covered an matted in blood, It appeared that all the fur was missing from its neck area all the way around,,,, Also lt appers he has lost part of his right hind foot. the first 2 days he was pretty shaky. You could tell he was having problems walking an such---probaly still a bit in shock I would guess.,,,,, Iam afraid the 2 swollen areas might be infection. An I cant say for sure but maybe hes losing weight ?

noel - can you get a HAVAHART trap and catch this poor lil fuzzer? Please let us know what city you are in so we can find a rehabber or TSB member that might be close enough to help.

Also - can you please put some fresh / cool / water out in a bowl along with some good food?
It needes to be in a safe place with overhead cover so hawks / owls can't pounce on him and an area clear of cats.

noel - this stuff ALWAYS happens on a Saturday night - never ever fails.
You will need to purchase a SQUIRREL size HAVAHART trap - if too big the squirrels weight will not be adequate to trigger the doors shut.
Next - line the trap floor with pine needles or whatever the ground covering you have in your yard. Place the trap near wherever he eats with one side of the trap near the tree trunk and the other side somewhat disguised with some grass or twigs - don't let anything interfere with the door closing mechanism though.
Making sense so far?

noel - squirrels do NOT carry rabies - so no need to panic or worry if you or one of your family members gets a scratch or bite. I've been accidently bitten by a number of our outdoor crew and have never even had an infection.
Next - the bait - they LOVE black oil sunflower seed - not good for them but they are addicted to it. You can buy a small bag at the hardware store in the bird seed area. Usually about $5 a bag.
The trap and bait needs to go into action quickly - by tomorrow if possible - time is important here.
Still with us?

Just one more thing about trapping. If possible could you put something over it (top & sides) they stress less if they can't see out once trapped. Thanks for caring:thankyou and Good Luck:grouphug
