What could cause a burnt yellow discoloration around a grey squirrel's mouth? I though at first it was blood, there was an awful squirrel fight yesterday, but when I bribed him with a peanut to come closer, it did not look like a boo boo as much as a yellow discoloration. Myabe my old eyes are seeing things, but has anyone seen this before? Is it possible he was just wetter than usual? He seemed his usual self.:dono

Do you have any black walnut trees in the area? That will leave such a stain. :)

Aha! Yes, me! I'm the black walnut tree. I have given them some black walnuts. Is that bad for them? Only the bigger ones can get them open.

Well, and its been raining like the dickens here, so I guess it was walnuts plus water = stain. Thanks for relieving my mind. Chubby is an urban squirrel, and there are LOTS of dumpsters out back. I'm always worried what they might get into.

This mouth staining is still worrying me. The guy in question continues to look and act pretty healthy (except for scars and a sorry looking tail), but the mouth stain looks worse, and I have not been handing out black walnuts for a couple weeks now, Here are some pictures. Can anyone tell me anything about this condition? Is it really walnut staining> If so, he is getting them from somewhere else.

Sorry for the photo qulaity, but he wasn't particularly cooperative.

I agree - a stain of some sort. It can take quite a while for some kinds of stain to wear off. Also, someone else may be handing out black walnuts, or there may be a tree somewhere near that he is getting them from. I'd just keep an eye on him, and try not to worry. (I know, easier said than done!)

Frick has yellow (pale yellow) stains on her tummy....I didn't really think anything of it - should I be concerned about it? It's not nearly as dark as this little guy's. Just looks like she spilled something yellow on her or something.

I have one that cometo my window that has the same stain or coloring. I thought it was just an unusual coloring until I saw this thread. There is a pecan tree in the yard behind us. Could that do it?

Thanks for the encouragement guys.

It really makes him look sort of villainous. Like he hasn't shaved for a week! All he needs is a little eye patch and a kerchief tied round his head.:rotfl

I feel for him, though. Squirrels seem pretty censorious. Anybody that doesn't look right can get picked on or ostracized.
