View Full Version : Fallen got his cast off

I can't even believe this and I don't know how he even did it. I went in the room at 10pm as he was making a awful ruckes and low and behold he is trying to get out of his cage as his cast is dangling from his shoulder area by the vet tape. So I am sitting here with a crazy squirrel who is trying to get away from a dangling cast and I'm trying to hold him still long enough to get it off. I ended up having to cut a v-shape as the tape was adhere to his skin and from him already pulling the cast off, his fur is gone from the inside of his arm and raw. I kept the e-collar on as I put neosporin on his arm and have him settled back down in his cage.
I feel like I am getting nowhere with him now that he did this. I have to say all bruising and swelling is gone, so that makes me feel good. However, back to the vet with him in the morning! I think she'll just go ahead and x-ray him then and recast...he was due to go for a check up on Monday, so a few days early shouldn't matter. ***Sigh*** I still don't know how he did it, unless he's lost weight or because the swelling went down so it was more easily slipped off....either way :soapbox He's more aggressive in trying to get it off rubbing it against the rug and corners of dressers etc. I guess he was successful as he got what he wanted....that dang cast off :shakehead
I'm worried that he might have reinjuried himself as he slipped his whole arm out of it..he had to have bent and twisted trying to remove his arm from it. I just hope there is no damage from his Houdini act and we don't have any set backs from this!

I thought the vet took the cast off when I saw the name of this thread. Oh no....I'm glad you can take him back in tomorrow and it didn't happen Saturday.
Best of luck to you and that sweet Fallen. Hope they let the cast stay off.

I wish to but he's only had it on for 2.5 weeks, so I'm thinking not! I am so disappointed by this. Yes THANK GOD it's Thursday and I can call first thing tomorrow morning. I'm bringing the whole cast in, she'll be amazing and wonder how he did it :shakehead
:thankyou

Oh boy! I guess it is a good thing if it came off because the swelling has gone down. I guess he was expecting the thing would just come off and dissapear. :shakehead
I'm with Luv, so grateful this happened mid-week. Hugs for you, and prayers for Fallen.:grouphug
Oh no the little bugger. I sure pray he didn't do more damage to his leg. Hope all turns out well at vet tomorrow. Good luck

Between Fallen and Nicky this seems to be the week for Squirrel self-cast-removal! They are both so darn cute they probably both know they'll get away with their :monkey antics, at least temporarily! :crazy I'm sure Fallen must be very proud of him self and his super powers! :smiley_superman

They can be regular Houdini's that is for sure! What about one of those popsicle stick splints and soft wraps like Nicky had, and the collar to keep him from getting it off? It is allot lighter weight and worked really well not to negatively impact his fur or cause chaffing.

sorry to hear, if you had a first aid kit and i read this a few hours ago i would of suggested maybe some gauze and a popsicle stick and wrap it up so Fallen dont move it for the night, hopefully He is sleeping, maybe He took it off because it is all healed, the x ray will be good news :thumbsup good luck.

If the vet says he still needs support I am going to ask about this because there is no way they are going to be able to cast and retape as his fur is almost totally gone from the inside and his poor tender skin there is raw. I think this suggestion is VERY GOOD :thumbsup
Even if they cast and then put popsicle to wrap the tape around is better than nothing. I'll talk to them about it....:thankyou

I have a first aid kit but no popsicle sticks :(
Guess I should buy some and add to the first aid kit :thumbsup
Although after finally getting the bit of tape of last night, he wasn't having anything else done to him....frantic and wanting to crawl into something to sleep. He hated to see his cage again :shakehead But was fine and went right back to bed, I put the cage in my son's room as my son slept in his brother's room. That way hubby and I didn't disturb him by going back to bed, talking and getting up this morning.

I'm grateful too as usually our luck around here is do it on a Friday night :dono
He reminded me of a cat that has something on them and they run etc. trying to get away from something that is attached to them :shakehead

Nicky was the first thing that came to mind when I was trying to remove the last bit of tape from his fur. I still don't get how they both managed to get cast off with e-collars. Obviously the dr. knew this could happen and that is why she taped it.....I guess she won't be too surprise, but more surprised that he didn't chew it off and it is whole :poke

Rachel.....lets hope so! If he is all healed and doesn't need that cast, I'll be doing :wahoo :alright.gif :wahoo :alright.gif :wahoo :alright.gif Although Fallen would be celebrating by doing this :jump :jump
After I removed the cast and taping completely from danging by his shoulder fur, he got away from me and really wasn't using that arm. He probably still thought it was on as I'm sure his arm feels really really funny! I'm sure his skin is quit sore too so that might have contributed to his thinking that his arm still hurts. Well we'll see what dr. says today! :thankyou

I think chewing would have been better in Fallen's case. The way he did it he had to bend and twist that arm and paw to get it out :sanp3 I just hope all that movement didn't do damage! I thought I was doing so well, and I was so proud I had kept him from chewing it off :poke and with that pride came the Fall!!
Guess I should keep that pride in check :rofl4

VET JUST CALLED!! :jump
She is leaving cast off......says it is healed and has a really good calloused bone that healed around it. She said the cast coming off really gave him a good fur removal with rawness but we won't have to worry about another cast going on or off. She said to keep him confined for another couple of weeks for further healing!
Yea no cast :jump But still more prayers! I'm going to have to confine him more than without the cast as we don't want him jumping and with cast off he'll be wanting to do more JUMPING than we want, so poor baby is going to have a rough couple of weeks due to being more confined!
Obviously this is good news. Now to see how he uses it as he was still favoring it today but I don't know if that is because his leg feels funny, skin is sore from ripping the cast off or just tender from the overall experience of his injury.

So glad the outcome is good for him healing up! Strange it is as IF he KNEW it was time for it to come off, yet to loose the fur and get the irritation is not so good of course. Does the Vet say to put anything on that?
Hi There
I am so happy to hear his leg is better and no cast Great News:thumbsup
I wonder putting something on his leg to help heal the skin may help and use e-collar for 2 hours maybe so he can't lick it then wipe with used tea. It won;t hurt him and it does wonders, putting his leg in bowl of warm tea. Good Luck hope you both have a good day.:)

Tea therapy; who'd of thought! I sure would love to see Video of that happening; kind of like a scene from Alice in wonderland, at the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, "Would you like a dip of squirrel in your tea?". :crazy Have some small bits of walnut and pecan, to bribe him with, for that one!

We are home. He was so quiet and hiding in his fleece that he had me worried, then I remembered they had to gas him for x-rays. He perked up on the way home and when we got home I had his esbilac formula in a cup waiting for him, so he consumed that and a half walnut. After that he wanted to play with me but I thought it best he just rest after being at the vets and being gassed and all. He is now in his cage with water and food...first time since his accident. I was worried about him choking on the food due to not being able to hold his food with the e-collar and I tried the water dish but no matter where it was high or low he managed to dip his cast so I removed it and allowed him to drink when out of the cage.....I'm sure he is happy have food and water at his descretion :D
The leg looks good. The deep red irritation is now pink. I'm sure the neosporin helped. Dr. took the e-collar off and said do nothing further to the leg and the fur shall grow back soon. I'll keep emu oil on it to keep the skin from getting dry and iritated as emu oil is not dangerous to consume, and it doesn't leave the skin oily and absorbs pretty quickly.
Pics since we got back from the vets :D

I'd think he would need to be gassed to do a tea soaking....that boy is not going to sit still for nothing :shakehead

Those are sure precious photos of your boy; a real charmer that one! The arm is look'in real good on the outside, seems he can use it to hold his food fine.

It's wonderful to see him clasp it for the first time in 3 weeks. I was happy to see him use his arm by putting weight on it after the vet's visit and then to clasp the nut was a :wahoo moment for me. Yea he looks normal now :D well other than his fur missing :poke

I do think so :alright.gif
Had us worried beings we couldn't pin it or anything....just let nature take it's course and hope it stayed "set" and go from there. He's been acting like he was ready to have it off over the last couple of days, as if the bedroom door opened he would zoom out and I would have to go after him. When he had the cast on in the beginning he would drag it whle he walked, and I noticed over the past couple of days while he walked he would bear weight on it. I'm sure that helped loosen the cast too.

I'm estactic at how fast he did heal......
He's been tearing the cardboard down from the mesh wiring over the past week.....got two pieces down since home from the vets....the only two not wired on...he's busy now :shakehead I just got done wiring those cardboard pieces into place so hopefully he can't get to the wire mesh. Such a busy boy and now that the cast is off he is tyring to GOOOOOOOOOO! Have him busy burying shelled nuts in his cage now :rotfl He won't crack the shells :shakehead lazy boy but give him a acorn or hickory nut from the trees around here and he'll work on those...but the other nuts....nah to much work :poke unless he really really wants one and then he'll open them!
