Hey, my names Anthony I have had a southern flyer for about 10 days now. When i got her she was a couple months old. Do you think this will affect the bonding process??

She has been spending more than 5 hours a day with me, but she still seems to be scared she has biten me a couple times (on the first I had her and yesterday) is this a bad sign?? also when she isn't in a pocket she loves to run away from me.

im a little worried and would love any tips or tricks I dont want to mess her up!!! any one who has anything to say PLZ would love some help

-Thanks

Hi Anthony and :Welcome to TSB....Sounds like your little girl is eager to explore...It is natural for them to want to do this, afterall it's all new to them....as for the bonding...sounds like you are on your way there..It is good she is spending 6 hours a day with you...does she stay in your shirt or in a pouch on your person?

The biting...there are a few reasons flyers (squirrels) bite...did you try to pet her while she was sleeping? Were you trying to pick her up or make a sudden move to grab her? otherwise I wouldn't worry about it....everyone on here has love scars....:rotfl

What is her diet? is she getting greens, vegies and fruit? How many nuts is she eating per day and what kind? Is she getting vitamin and calcium supplements? These babies need specific foods to maintain a healthy life....

We love pictures, so don't hold back....

:Welcome

I have an 8 month old flyer named Secret, I got him when he was 6 wks old.
I don't think 2 months is too old to expect your baby to bond with you, it took a long time for Secret to completly bond with me and I hand fed him.

If you go here: http://www.nfsa.us/phpBB2/index.php (the national flying squirrel website) and scroll down there are a couple of threads on adult and pup flyer diets that are pretty informative.

This is what Secrets diet consists of:

daily: 1 pecan half, 1 almond
slice of mushroom (they especially like ****ake and

small piece of sweet potato

kale, broccoli or other high calcium green leafy vege (I have to admit he rarely eats them though)

a couple of in shell nuts-walnuts, filberts which I crack slightly for him

a chunk of a critter scone which I make myself-a compliation of recipes I have found on here that I have tweaked so that he will eat them
mine consists of esbilac puppy formula powder, yogurt, peanut butter, egg, ground almonds and pecans and some cal-rep powder.

a good guality parrot mix which includes dried fruit, nuts, seeds

I also try to pick him fresh stuff from outside: rose petals, dandelions.. in fact here is a link of safe and unsafe plants, etc for sugar gliders that I refer to: http://www.moondance-sugargliders.com/sugar_glider_plant-tree_information.htm

He also gets 3-4 other veges-carrots, tomatoes, avocado, potato, parsnip, etc
and a couple small pieces of fresh fruit daily. Sometimes I offer him cheese, sometimes he eats it, others he turns his nose up.-

I give him live and dried mealy worms pretty often, have tried crickets live and dried but he doesn't eat them. Some are able to get theirs to eat yogurt or yogurt smoothies which provided a lot of calcium but Secret doesn't care much for that either.

I also use calcivet-a liquid calcium used for birds(mixed in his water) and a vitamin drop. I sprinkle rep-cal on his food every few days also.

This probably seem overwhelming but their diet is very important, once you get a routine going it's not that hard and since they are pretty small eaters a little goes a long way.

good luck!!

Moths....Timothy loves moths...semi-alive....

Any fruit with pits...peaches, cherries, necerines, etc must have the pit removed as it is toxic to squirrels....also pear, apple seeds need to be removed....grapes need to be peeled and cut in half or quarters

A word or caution....flyers can't swim, so if they get into say a toilet they will drown because they are unable to get themselves out.....keep the lid closed or close off the bathroom....:poke
