Okay, so I am moving with my baby (Maximum, who really isnt a baby anymore) to california adn I want to get her a big 'home'. We are moving into a MUCH smaller house and I want to get Max an outdoor avairy. She is a flying squirrel, just about 6 months old. Would she be allright out there? I would have an indoor 'home' to for her on bad weather days or cold nighs. Also, i have some other questions that are probally pretty dumb:
It is a huge 'home' and I am thinking about getting her a friend, what do you think of that? Would she love me any less (I would still give her 2 hours of play each night) And (here comes the stupid one) would she get along with finches?

thanks oodles!:peace

Since California is an 'illegal' state, I would not put her in an outdoor cage - there is always the possibility that some nut would report you! Also, be careful chosing a vet - maybe someone on here can recommend one.

That being said, most of my flyers stay outdoors year round. They have nice warm nest boxes and plenty of bedding, so the cold doesn't bother them. If we have a really cold norther blow through, I will wrap the north and west sides of the cages in clear plastic for protection from the wind. In the summer I will run a fan for them if it is really hot and humid outside. (Who am I trying to kid - it's ALWAYS hot and humid here in Texas in the summer!)

She might or might not enjoy another flyer for company, but will be just as happy without one, as long as she has you. If you do get another, they will bond with each other, and your girl will not be as closely bonded to you as now, although she will still love you and enjoy playing with you.

DO NOT keep her in a cage with finches, or any other birds. Birds can carry diseases that flyers can catch - I won't even keep my flyers in cages that have held birds until the cages have been throughly disinfected. Plus, the birds would bother the flyers during the daytime, and the flyers would disturb the finches at night, and possibly eat them, their babies, or their eggs.

If it was me, I'd just keep the one flyer, and keep her indoors.

Whoa, this may be your lucky day, I am a member in California that has such a cage for sale. It measure 8 L by 5 wide, by 4 T. This cage is good for the inside, or an enclosed patio. It is modular, being made in easily assembled panels. If you would like to see it, contact me on my PM board.

Don't forget to check with Gammas Baby on the OTT light, which is needed for these squirrels, if housed inside.
