I don't think dog food is that great for them, but 7-grain bread is very good. Sometimes we encourage squirrel babies to eat solids by giving them pieces of 7-grain bread soaked in Esbilac. :)

I give my squirrels - flyers and tree squirrels - a dog treat made by VitaLife....Chicken Chips or Chicken Poppers. The Chicken Chips are 100% chicken - nothing else. They are nickle-sized pieces of dried chicken. (crude protein - 64% min. fat - 2%, fiber - 4%, moisture - 18%)The Chicken Poppers are about marble-sized chicken meat and rice. (protein - 30%, fat - 1%, fiber - 4%, moisture - 18%) I usually use the Chips, and the squirrels sound like they are opening nuts when they eat them! They all like them, and they're a great source of protein.
Their website is www.vitalifemadewithlove.com. They're made in China (of course) for Northdown Industries Inc. Toronto, Ontario.
I only give them as treats occasionally, every couple of weeks or so, and have been using them for about 6 months.
Oh yes, I get them at PetSmart.
