I work with the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota in the mammal nursery - notably, baby squirrels. The WRC of Minnesota treats over 8,000 patients each year, making it easily one of the largest in the country.

I lead the Friday mid-shift, meaning that I'm responsible for the care of over a hundred baby squirrels each week. I thought that, since many have probably never been inside rehabilitation center, I might offer advice. All the care-taking techniques at the WRC are carefully laid out, devised by veterinarians, and tested true on hundred of babies each year... so it could be helpful.

A bit of common sense... I won't be very useful for bonding/behavioral problem questions, seeing as we avoid the sort of thing at the WRC. However, I may be very useful for tips about caring for squirrels in mass, as well as health tips and such. Just give it a try and I'll reply as honestly as possible.

At the WRC of Minnesota, we treat mainly... grey squirrels, red squirrels, and flying squirrels.

I also work in an avian nursery, at the local Raptor Center, and at a rather large aquarium... so I may be useful in other areas as well.

Oh... and I'm new to this forum, so... hello. :)

Lol! I wouldn't say that I have a "vast knowledge" of squirrels at all - I just thought that feeding tips, etc. from the rehabilitation center might be useful for pet owners. ^_^

4skwerlz: We have two "busy" seasons - one in Fall and Spring respectively. Right now, we are very slow, but I wouldn't call it a slow summer. About a month and a half ago we had the room filled with little squirrel baskets stacked up in twos or threes, and I imagine that we will be there again come late July.

Thank you for the warm welcome, everyone!
