PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TO DO!?! Forgive me if I seem a bit harsh right now but I am seeing red!!! Three baby squirrels have appeared outside our window (second floor) a few weeks ago. It has brought my wife and I much joy to see them grow and to feed them. The squirrels in our neighborhood have it pretty ruff due to all the cars and no trees or natural things to eat. So I help them out when I can by feeding them, especially ones so close! Well the A-hole next door is SHOOTING THEM! He just planted bamboo and the squirrels are eating the shoots as they come up. Understand that his roof is attached to ours... The squirrels have come to trust us so they will sit there and eat. This guy is basically shooting fish in a barrel... I just begged him to stop. He agreed to for now. I told him to give me 24 hours to try and find a way to get them to stop. He refuses to let me build a wire mesh cover for his ugly plants. Should I trap and relocate them? Would that be ok for the squirrels? I would LOVE to let them live out there lives here so I could watch and feed them but I am not that selfish because I believe that when I am gone he will shoot them... WHAT DO I DO??? Please, any suggestion right now will SAVE THE LIVES OF THESE BABY SQUIRRELS! Chad

I think this would be a case where to catch them and release them to a better world with tall trees may be the smart thing to do. Not to mention , wonderful to you as well for your part in doing that. I can't stand A hole neighbors!

What a jerk....if he thinks the squirrels are taking over wait until that bamboo starts spreading:shakehead I do not know what to tell you:dono could he get in trouble with the authorities for shooting them:poke jerk like that could turn to poisoning if so though:soapbox
Call the police. It's against the law to discharge a firearm in a residential area or near housing. In the meantime a split box of salt should end the bamboo problem.

That may stop the shooting but piss him off enough to turn to the poisoning route:shakehead since you said it was not a good area for them anyway in this case relocation may be your best option:peace

I'm sure Mars is right about shooting being illegal. Every state I ever heard of has safety provisions in their hunting laws that say you can't discharge a firearm (which includes BB guns) within 500 yards of a dwelling without permission from the occupants.
Break one of your windows with the smallest rock you can find. Then call the cops and tell them it was hit with a ricochet. The cops will confiscate the gun and by the time he gets it back the kids will be grown and gone.

oh give me a break.. bamboo grows like crazy, even here. the squirrels are not going to decimate the bamboo. tell him to pretend they're pandas! If you plant food gee someone might eat it, scary thought! what a buffoon.
I wonder if squirrels would likethat bamboo comes in a can that you use in stir fry... then they'd want that and not the neighbor stuff... :dono
anyway, anyone shooting that close to other domeciles can not be legal.

God! That's just awful!! I hope somehow you can make him stop. I agree about the bamboo - it's not like it isn't going to take over at some point for pete's sake. That stuff in invasive.
I had about 6 squirrels burying some walnuts in my garden this morning that I accidentally left on the porch. They dig all around the established plants and keep the weed population at bay. I APPRECIATE them. Can you put out something to tempt them into your yard away from the bamboo?
I had a friend who planted bamboo and the squirrels around her yard ignored it. Is he even sure it is the squirrels?
You don't have to use a "firearm" to shoot something or someone. Other weapons can be used and not discharge a round of ammunition!
Catch them and release them elsewhere. In the meanwhile, if you see this turd neighbor with a firearm or other weapon, call the police. Anyone that stupid to plant bamboo is not only a danger to wildlife and the nearby neighbors, but a danger to himself!

Well, good news... sort of... A strong T-storm just blew in so that chased the lil' guys home for now. YES, discharging a firearm, even a pellet gun is illegal here in the city. I have already said to my wife that I gave him a chance... If I catch him shooting at them I will call the police and say that a man is shooting a rifle (it has a scope on it) out of his window, I don't have to say at what. That should bring them here in a hurry! Funny you mentioned the broken window, I was going to tell them a shot came into my bathroom (the window facing the roof).
MARS... "split box of salt" what will that do? Keep the squirrels away or kill the bamboo?
Mrs. Jack... PANDAS!!! I love it! Somehow I think this awful "man" would shoot a Panda too!
So is my best bet relocation? If so, how? A live trap? What kind of bait? I am pretty sure I saw em' for sale at Home Depot... By catching one at a time, with them being at this age, will any harm come to them from being relocate d and split up?
Honestly, I feel like telling him that if ANY harm comes to them he will be dealing with a neighbor who will make it his mission to bring misery and destruction (cut tires, broken windows, stolen mail and so on) for the next 25 years or until I get board... whichever comes first! BUT, I am not that type of guy (or am I!?!) so I will ONCE AGAIN take a passive approach to these "people" who hate themselves so much that all they can do is harm defenseless animals...
Thanx again TSB and if anyone can come up with another solution or other way to deal with this, I will be waiting...

Yes, he caught them in the act... It's not fully grown yet... He just made these ugly planter boxes and the squirrels are eating the "shoots" as they come up... My roof is connected to his (we live in the city)... The squirrels live in that chimney in the picture... I have been feeding them but since we are the first humans they have seen, all they now know is that a person in a window brings treats. What they don't know is the moron in the next window brings death!!!

Here is a pic of the roof... The squirrels live up in that chimney to the left and his window is out of frame off to the right. The chimney in question is on a garage that is hardly ever used...
On a lighter note... as the T-storm was blowing in my wife was keeping an eye on them, they were running around the roof gathering up some of the peanuts we tossed them... Anyway, a really strong gust came along and blew all three of them right off their feet onto their sides! They slid about 7 feet across the roof and then finally caught their footing and all three looked around as if to say.. "Ummm, what the heck do you call that!?!" It was pretty funny!...

I am with Mrs. J! Salt...squirrels...??
Nothing short of nuclear war will kill bamboo.
In many areas it is considered a nuisance plant and is illegal to plant except in pots.

Chad, I don't know if the salt will keep the squirrels away, but it shouldn't hurt the bamboo. And might work. Someone here suggested that I pour salt around my hosta plants to keep the slugs away -- it works and has not hurt the hostas.
Another suggestion -- maybe you could "arm" your neighbor with one of those soaker-type water guns? People have used them to "train" cats etc. to stay away. I think they have pretty good range. Maybe he can use that to guard his planters. :dono

I used some hot pepper spray that I got in a pet and farm store to spray on my plants on the porch because the Fab 5 like to "lounge" on the deck! Anyway, the hot pepper spray is also good to keep bugs off the plants. I also used some red pepper flakes on top of the soil in some of my house plants. The Fabulous 5 have decided they don't like any of the plants anymore on the porch.
Chad, if you do catch them for release, it would be great if you could release them all together in the same spot. Perhaps difficult because they have not been handled, but there's a good change they are sibblings and there's safety in numbers.

Thats a good idea, the soaker plus the pepper flakes may do the trick...
not sure how long I'd be able to cage one as I try to capture the siblings ...

If all else fails try throwing a piece of pizza and a beer in a cage for bait and relocate the neighbor

i have "a-hole" neighbors also.
at first i thought it was funny when i gave the squirrels nuts, that they would go around the neighborhood and bury them....the neighbor behind me cut down a tree which was home to a lot of squirrels and birds for no reason because they come around only once a week if that.......
Anyway!
ive had two injured squirrels in the last month.....one i saw this morning who looks like he had gotten something wrapped around his nose/ mouth area.
i had, what i believe to be, a squirrel shot with a BB gun last month.
i still havent figured out a cure for the a-hole neighbor,(besides the obvious) but if anyone knows one, please let me know.
the beer idea just might work though...
I wish a pizza and beer and a trap to relocate a neighbor would work. I have one also. One thing I did find and I did post my rotton neighbor as well, (with photo's to back me up), it is a website http://www.rottenneighbor.com/ and you can locate the exact location of your neighbor and you can post exactly what you feel about the neighbor, and it can be done without disclosing who you are, although in my case, I'm sure that my neighbor knows because of the photo's. Well, at least only if he has checked this website. Anyway, I found it fun .

You should still report the discharge of any weapon... just mentioning a guy shooting anything in Phila. should get the PDs attention. ( some of the air guns on the market today can do some real damage ).
good luck.

Urban wildlife is protected by law, NO MATTER what they eat in anyone's garden! If you know for sure who has done this, and heard the neighbor complain, you have enough to turn them in. They will very likely try to defend themselves then if confronted, admitting what they have done, and that will be that. Others have done this, and it immediately stopped the mayhem. I would also do as the members say, to do all you can do to entice the little guys over to your yard. Try adding a salt block, they can't resist it, once hooked on it, they won't leave it alone! They carry mineral salt spools at the local pet shot, brown in color, not the white ones that are salt alone.
